Heavy drinkers are downing even more alcohol than they were 10 years ago, sinking an average of 45 standard alcoholic drinks every week, a study released today shows.
The study shows the top 10 per cent of heaviest boozers drink three times the amount of alcohol as the average Australian does and 5 per cent more than a decade ago.
At the same time, an analysis of four national surveys of 20,000 people over the past 10 years found lighter drinkers were drinking even less and more people were abstaining from alcohol.
Dr Livingston said though the 5 per cent increase in alcohol intake among heavy drinkers over a decade appeared small, it was a change that would have a strong impact on the risk of illness and injury.
Another study being released by the NDARC today reveals that differences in drinking levels among men and women have virtually disappeared over the past century.
Men born in the early 1900s were three times more likely to drink alcohol than women.
Women born in the 1990s are almost as likely to drink alcohol as men.

I like a glass or two or three myself, but It's sad to see how the drinking culture is corrupting our young people.
How alcohol was heavily advertised as "give Dad the gift he want's for Father's Day" disturbed me too. I'm sure there are a lot of kids out there, who the last thing they'd want is the sight of their Dad staggering drunk and abusive.

When people (usually young adults) drink a large amount of spirits so that they are intoxicated before they go out. I think it's actually called preloading.

Oh yes I get you now. That's so they can get drunk without paying bar prices.
The general idea is to "go out and get smashed" not go out to have fun.
The only way it's fun is if you can get blind drunk. So destructive.

It happens a lot over here in the west, arguably because of the supposedly high prices of drinks in the clubs but I expect it is a nationwide phenomenon sadly.
I understand the 'bouncers' over here have a huge job vetting those who try to enter the clubs in a 'pre-loaded' state. They sure would have their work cut out for them also dealing with the abuse they receive.

I really dont understand it. I imagine drinks are expensive (no idea) but surely a couple of drinks over the night would be enough to relax your inhibitions enough to have fun if you need help doing so?

I don't try and understand it EM - peer pressure perhaps?
Advertising which 'glorifies' the consumption of alcohol?
The sponsorship of sporting clubs by beer and spirit companies?
Perhaps a combination of all the above and more .....
Time for some advertising control maybe!
