Boat people - a "passing irritant" apparently

Pre election Abbott considered this his number on priority. Day after day, the Labor government was pummelled on all sides about the issue. Those seeking asylum were demonised and the Australian people were made to feel unsafe in their own country because of  "illegals" that had to be stopped. Abbott had not just one but 3 different 'policies' in place to deal with the catastrophe that was occuring in this country.

But now that he is in charge, the issue is only a "passing irritant".

how much does a refugee cost during that "about a decade"?

Some people can go their whole lives and never really live for a single minute.

Well now that there is no longer a problem with our debt, I do not see having to pay for them being a problem.

Someone had an idea about sending them all to Tasmania to live and work and paying the Tasmanians 2 billion dollars a year.

Sounds  plausable unless your from Tasmania and hate foreigners .....oh  and there was work there.

Something about a huge saving doing this over sending them North, those found not to be genuien are sent back to where they came from.

I don't know why you are bothering to deflect/argue about this anyway.

Asylum seekers are no longer a problem. I repeat - they are no longer a PROBLEM.

Now that we have a new government the 'problem' has been downgraded to 'passing irritant'.

Problem solved.

Apparently.

And now that the boats are no longer reported, we have no idea what is being done to search for the 80 or so people missing (presumed drowned along with the 40 already confirmed drowned) in waters between Indonesia and Australia when their boat sank last night.

Luckily we still get news reports from other sources other than the government hey?

But that's the thing, Iza. It hasn't.  Every time you made that claim, you have only provided a link to that illegal boats count.  Illegal boats = illegal arrivals.  There is nothing illegal about that term, according to law experts on refugees.

you can search as I did ...Tony Abbott calls asylum seekers illegal.I will add a few links .In one Tony Abbott says it is illegal to get on a boat and arrive in another Country without papers .I agree....however if it is for the purpose of seeking asylum ..arriving by boat ,without papers is not illegal is it because seeking asylum isn't illegal is it ?

Tony Abbott says 'illegal' arrivals by boat have reached 50,000 under Labor; Tony Burke defends new policy

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has described as a "terrible milestone" the 50,000 "illegal" arrivals by boat since Labor won office in 2007.

MONDAY morning’s news is the government’s solution to asylum seekers: keep it secret!

Do you notice a pattern emerging? Malcolm Fraser managed to bring thousands of Vietnamese asylum seekers into Australia on a bipartisan agreement with Gough Whitlam, despite over 60 per cent of the population being against it; simply because it was the right thing to do.

John Howard realised he could tap into that 60 per cent and win an election with the children overboard lie. He then went on to courageously send in the SAS troops against the asylum seekers on the Tampa. ( I was more ashamed to be an Australian during this incident, than at any other time.)

Abbott learned from this, and ramped the rhetoric up further, deliberately demonising the asylum seekers by calling them illegal immigrants, even though he knew they were mostly not illegal immigrants, and by far, most of our illegal immigrants come by air. (Does this demonising of our most vulnerable people remind you of anybody?)

I didn't even bother to respond to that comment by silverfaun.

As I am sure even silverfaun will recall, there were many on here (including the departed nero) who RELISHED every boat sinking and announced every arrival with a new thread or 2.

So it is just a tad (understatement!) hypocritical to make the comment about how Labor supporters feel about the boat arrivals. Particularly since the crux of the opposition campaign centred on the issue.

Still cant find where, as you claimed, Tony Abbott called asylum seekers "illegals" or "illegal immigrants"

From your link:

"I don't call them illegal immigrants," says Tony Abbott. "I call them illegal arrivals by boat."

Article 31 - Refugees unlawfully in the country of refuge

1. The Contracting States shall not impose penalties, on account of their illegal entry or presence, on refugees who, coming directly from a territory where their life or freedom was threatened in the sense of article 1, enter or are present in their territory without authorization, provided they present themselves without delay to the authorities and show good cause for their illegal entry or presence.

I recall we initially had this discussion when AP Stylebook was making changes to describe people who lived in a country illegally.

The Stylebook no longer sanctions the term “illegal immigrant” or the use of “illegal” to describe a person. Instead, it tells users that “illegal” should describe only an action, such as living in or immigrating to a country illegaly.

That's how this whole argument began?  Wasn't it?
