At last it has been admitted what many of us have known for years. illegal boat immigrants are not refugees, they are economic refugees.
Bob Carr admitted this on Lateline with Tony Jones.
He also admitted that the immigration dept dealing with this massive influx has been staffed with people who are not competent & are pro immigrant in all forms.
We are seeing over 100 people a day arriving, Labor has totally lost control of the situation & we are facing an influx of illegal immigrants who are criminally invading us at will.
45.000 people are here in the community & detention with 100 a day arriving non stop.
This failure alone is an indictment on Rudd & further indictment on Gillard & Labor who have lied to us for 6 years & now they expect us to vote them back in.

Actually, the increase in boat arrival is due to increased instability in the world, and it is only going to get worse as the Syrian people who are in this moment surviving in horrendous conditions in the refugees camps in surrounding countries will be seeking to get resettled, and as troops are withdrawing from Afganistan there will be more people escaping away from there.
Indonesia could stop the boats, but they are just glad that some of the refugees are leaving; Indonesia is a poor country and they have many more of refugees than get through here.

Totally agree with this post. We're tackling the problem from the wrong end. People should be able to stay happy and prosperous without conflict from outside forces. Superpowers should stop arming rebels and/or stop turning a blind eye to arms dealers

It often gets trotted out, this "why don't you look after the refugees, take them into your own home, nyer nyer" as if it negates the opportunity to have an opinion about the subject, or invalidates your ability to empathise with their plight.
As azureline said above, for many people it may not be possible, or allowed. There are other ways of helping (ESL course assistance, other volunteering, fiscal or material donations) and I am sure that you, nero, can offer your help (as I do). Maybe here is a place to start:

Let me know how you get on, I would be keen to know. It will be a very rewarding experience.
I hadn't heard about this..it's a good idea imo
Asylum seekers to be live-in help
TREVOR PADDENBURG
THE SUNDAY TIMES
APRIL 13, 2013
ASYLUM seekers will be used as live-in companions for retirees and to "help out" on farms across WA under a new homestay scheme starting next month and backed by the Immigration Department.
Live-Every West Australian with a spare room is being urged to sign up for the Homestay Helping Hand program, with hosts paid $50 a week for each asylum seeker in exchange for providing board and food.
Asylum seekers, in return, are urged to "help out around the home or farm", "pick up the shopping", or "provide company for someone who's lonely".
The scheme will be run by the Australian Homestay Network, which finds accommodation for asylum seekers after they are processed on Christmas Island and released by the Immigration Department on bridging visas while their refugee claims are assessed.

I read that and while I think it is probably a good thing... it immediately reminded me of an x friend of my husband's.......who once said to me....
" I am not racist against Aboriginal people, every home should have one" 😐
Suffice to say, he was no longer a friend we chose to have in our home.

I agree there is that aspect to it Az .
It could have suited my Nanna...she could have stayed in her home much longer and had live in 24/7 company .She would have liked that

looks like slave labour to me...
no one should be forced to live anywhere and work for nothing and that is just what they would be doing...
I can see this being exploited by a rare few...

no they are not they are not seeking refuge they are seeking to illegally enter the country with the intent to improve their finacail position, & this ties the systemup 7 stop our ability to help those that are truely in need
For 1000th time; entering country and asking for protection is NOT illegal. And there is NO queue, it is just the luck of the draw, being in the right time in the right place for people to get accepted as immigrants.
Tell me, if you were not in danger, would you travel on the other side of the world, giving up everything you have to get there & risking your life, just that your financial position would improve? Many of those who get into the boats have already sat in Indonesia or Malaysia for a number of years hoping to get accepted for resettlement, and they see more and more people arriving and can see no other way out than getting on the boat.
Yes, I DO AGREE it would be nice to stop the boats, but HOW? Most of the people who are here without appropriate papers arrive with a valid visa and then stay.

What does that have to do with economic immigrants?
And there is NO queue, it is just the luck of the draw, being in the right time in the right place for people to get accepted as immigrants.
Gosh, what was our ex PM on about then.......
"As Prime Minister I won't tolerate people smugglers attempting to bend and break the will of the Government to protect our borders and also our will to do the right thing as a country and to provide safe haven for those in need," Ms Gillard warned.
"I want to be very clear about this: under this arrangement if someone seeks to come to Australia they are at risk of going to Malaysia and going to the back of the queue....."
Most of the people who are here without appropriate papers arrive with a valid visa and then stay.
What appropriate papers?
