Devastated friends have taken to social media to express their shock and sorrow after an 11-year-old boy was killed by his father at a cricket oval in Melbourne's southeast.
Luke Batty died from severe head injuries at the oval in Tyabb, near Hastings, after he was attacked following the local club's cricket training.
The year six Flinders Christian Community College pupil was treated at the scene but was unable to be revived.
The victim's 54-year-old father, from Chelsea Heights, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition, after police say he came at officers with a knife after they were called to the scene in Tyabb, near Hastings, about 6.30pm (AEDT).
Commander Doug Fryer would not confirm if the father inflicted the boy's "quite brutal" injuries or exactly how the boy died, insisting that it was a matter for the coroner.
"I confirm that the male shot by police is father of the child who is deceased and we're not looking for anyone else," he said during a media briefing at the scene last night.
"I can confirm that the young boy has died of significant injuries. I'm not going to go into the detail of how they occurred or what they were," Fryer said on Thursday morning.

A man with warrants out for child porn was suppose to protect the boy? How bout the cops, his mother and child protection? They all played a part in not keeping him safe. I've read his tribute page, read about the hard life he had. Seeing as you know so much about what the mother is going to do (go back to england ans so on) why did she not phone the police when the father first turned up? Why when she knew he was so violent did she say she thought a public place was safe? Why did she not lead her child away to safe place when he first turned up?
The father didnt attack straight away, he waited. She had time to get her child to safety, to call for help

Did she know about the warrants out for child porn? If she did why would she want her child anywhere near him?
So much went wrong with the adults and the poor boy paid the ultimate price.
She says Greg had not violated terms of the AVO by attending the event.

I understand your pain.
However, there is another mother (and a father) out there somewhere, who lost a son and a grandson that day.

YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND MY PAIN...........you dont even know me so please dont pretend to think you do.
Yes there is another mother and father out there that has lost their grandchild and the son that killed the boy.
BUT it is the mother of the boy that will be feeling the most pain, she gave birth to the boy, he was her only child, if you have never lost a child, you have no idea, of the heartbreak, the sadness and the grief, she will go through.........

So, the AVO possibly was not about the child. That would be why the mum was not on the scene at the time.

AZ, I doubt it...........if and I know their are posters on this board that have lost children in death..........but most if not all would know how that child died.
I dont know how my son died, I was told at one stage what it was, has since inquired through my solicitor a few things and he in turn contacted the coroner on my sons case................now it appears, they are not sure how he died, ...........do you know how hard that is to live with, I dont know how my own son died, and I have to live with that and that is tearing me apart............so no, you dont know how I feel.

Had the adults around the boy been doing their job correctly the outcome may have been different. The father should not have been able to have any access to the child while under investigation for child pornography. I really hope that the mother knew nothing about that aspect of the fathers life. If she did, in my eyes she failed to keep the boy safe.
My concern is for the boy and all he had gone through previously according to his tribute page

My sister has been the victim of domestic violence, and although the children were all witness to that, the abuse was never directed towards them. I think a lot of abused women have that experience and thats why they feel its ok for the fathers to have access, especially in such a public place, and in many cases it probably is ok.
