I think the context is what it comes down to. Traditionally Africans were referred to as blacks. Then when Australia was invaded by the British, the Indigenous Australians were labelled that by the same empire that referred to Africans as blacks. Personally I believe indigenous Australians should be referred to as Koori or Murri or Aboriginal. There are Indians in India who have a complexion that is not brown, it is black as coal. I've never heard them referred to as blacks and yet they and many people from Sri Lanka are darker than full blooded indigenous Australians.
