Carlton Sued under 18C Racial Vilification

Many Australians were wondering why Carlton the rabid racist,  was allowed to continue his rants against the Jewish population for so long.

Section 18C of the act makes it unlawful anything that is reasonably likely to offend, insult, humiliate or intimated groups of people on the grounds of race, ethnicity or national origin.

The Herald’s editorial position supported the retention of 18C, and many columnists were also sympathetic to its cause.

So the Herald Sun backed the retention of 18c, a direct assault on free speech but it has now come  home to roost for them. Poetic justice perhaps.

yes I'm happy to say that acc. was suspended yeaterday, it took pollies to do it though, I think heaps of people were reporting it. That person was one of the ones instumental in the MC thing and was also the same person who did the same to Charlotte Dawson apparently

You say this:

In the next breath after referring to Mike Carlton a rabid racist?

I think 18C its stupid, from what I've seen it's the most abusive people who use the ï'm reporting you under 18C when anyone responds to their abuse lol

I agree Carlton should be sued because he violatated 18c  but in another breath I believe 18c restricts freedom of speech.

The law of the land as it stands today is he violated section 18c and he is being sued for it.

Debra, I get most of my news from the ABC, The Guardian and Al Jazeera English.

On s. 18C, the first step is to lodge a complaint with the HRC. The HRC considers the merits, and tries to get the parties to come to a compromise. Complaints don't often get to court.

Yes but for the last 6 years Labor has defended this section but now want to get rid of it as soon as one of their darlings has fallen foul of it.

All the left on here rejoiced when AB was convicted of violating 18c even though he did not racially abuse anybody,  the judge just  "didn't like his tone" so that in itself shows this is a law that should have been repealed but Abbott caved into the leftist  media storm  and self interist minorities.
