The new government has a solution to the false expectations it raised with the promise to stop the boats it seems. simple. censor the arrival data by stopping the previous practice of the immigration dept releasing media alerts when a boat turns up or asks for assistance. this is the simplest and most effective way of hiding the true level of success or otherwise. censorship .. is the 'freedom of the press' that conservative catchcry merely another slogan they spruik without actually believing in it for one moment ?

I'm finding it difficult to reconcile this with the promise of more transparency.

100% agree with this... stop announcing the successful arrival of every boat so that the people waiting to leave Indonesia for our shores don't know if they will arrive or not... this is key to deterring people from taking a trip that could very well in death for them and their little children that they so willing put on a boat without even a life jacket.
The ALP even announced when a boat was intercepted and everyone was picked up like a taxi service.
I do think that there should be a periodic announcement of total arrivals as we do need to ensure that the plan is working but to make the announcement like a plane arriving is wrong.

the media isnt needed by the smugglers or refugees, they use phones. so they will know the facts but australian citizens wont. the argument you make is flawed therefore. its a tatty attempt to gag the media.

It's typical liberal dirty tactics of keeping the population as ignorant as they can. Cut school funding, hide evidence of their policy success or failures, sack public servants who provide essential services to the needy etc etc.

Agree with LL. It is 2013, not decades ago before mobile phones became common usuage for individuals.
There is no real reason why the citizens of Australia should not know how many people smuggling boats are arriving on our shores...nor any real reason why the media should be able to get this information and publish it.
If 50 people smuggling boats arrive in the next few weeks, we (the public) want to know that at the time, not 6mths or later when the Govt decides to release statistics.

Oh come on lol!
The lack of reporting isn't for the smugglers/indoneasians/familes benefits. It's so that us dumbnuts that have the Liberal Party as their government won't know the truth.
Refugees have mobile phone on them to spread their news. They don't use Murdoch as their news source.
It's a bit like Howard saying that less refugees arrived in Australia under his government. Without explaining that the numbers going into offshore processing were not included in the stats.
It's out and out lying.

yep, agreeing with Martini and Deb on this one.
The smugglers don't need the media to alert people of their arrival. and it's a scummy thing to try and keep the Australian public uninformed. I'd be interested to know what their reasons are for this rather than what we think their reasons are.
