Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has accused Prime Minister Kevin Rudd of dishonesty over his pledge to transfer all boat people to Papua New Guinea after it was revealed the government is planning a new detention facility in NSW.

Friday's economic update from the government showed $43.5 million allocated to providing 1000 detention places at a Singleton defence site in the Hunter Valley.
Mr Abbott said the detention plan "just exposes yet again Kevin Rudd's dishonesty", coming so soon after the prime minister announced his tough policy of transferring all boat arrivals to PNG.
Asylum seekers who arrive by boat have been told they have no chance of resettlement in Australia.
"Kevin Rudd said a fortnight ago every single person who arrives illegally by boat will go to PNG, and none of them will ever come to Australia," Mr Abbott told reporters in Melbourne.
"Well hang on a minute - how can he be telling us that they're all going to go to PNG when at the same time the word slips out yesterday that they're building a new detention centre at Singleton."

First there will be jobs building new facilities and upgrading the existing buildings, then there will be people required to work there. Materials would be sourced locally. Even if specialised staff comes from elsewhere they will live and shop in the town. Whatever is allocated to get the facility running would go into the community. Why is it that people do not seem to understand that if some project costs $X amount, it is not money sent to the moon?
That is money that is paid back to people in one form or another.
Which is why it makes no sense to me to be spending up big to build facilities and provide resources in PNG to settle the refuges. Why can't we spend the money here in Australia providing housing and other resettlement resources. That way at least we'd be getting some return by keeping the money here and creating employment.
Country towns are crying out for people to come and revive them. Australia is such a big place, why do they all have to live in the city?

How hard is it to understand that what Mr Rudd is trying to do is send a strong message to People Smugglers.
That's the main purpose of the arrangement with PNG. To STOP the People smugglers and break their business of putting people on boats.
Of course there are detention centres around Australia. How does Abbott not realise that.?

Well, the off-shore processing was started by the Howard government. He did it for no good reason and was a total waste of money, at least Rudd is doing it trying to stop the boats. Hope it will work when people in Indonesia will realise that to come to be settled in Australia they must not board the boats. In that case, there will not be money going to PNG. I am hoping that we start processing people in Indonesia and bringing them in, maybe first placing them in Singleton, if the centre will go ahead.

why doesn't he just let them come here and work?
because he is trying to do what the the loudest voices want (ie;the Andrew Bolts of our Country)
Those loud voices who proclaim to care about lives lost while spreading words of fear and hate that John Howard started with his children overboard lies ..we don't want people like this in our Country.Loud voices that say these people are dangerous, the security checks aren't good enough, these people are taking our jobs ,our money, our houses, have no respect for our Rights ,we will be taken over blah blah blah
Those loud voices are being heard and yet they still have a problem ?
I think some just like to make noise because they can .
... the reaction some of those loud voices would have if he did just that ? doesn't take any imagination really
