what petsures head vet who of course has pet cover for both her pets...(why, your a vet!) doesnt say is sure you take out your pet insurance,

but, your standing there in the vets surgery being told 'well we can fix him but its expensive'

you think, 'well i have my pet insurance, everything will be ok right?'

except you dont know until after you run up a huge bill your pet insurance doesnt cover this paricular 'fix'

now you have to find possibly thousands for the vet bill.

like the guy says, you take out car insurance before you drive off the lot, get in an acident on the way home your covered!

I'm not surprised to read this. During the Brisbane floods of 2011 Suncorp Insurance was praised for their speedy response to claims. But AAMI was heavily criticized because they denied many claims arguing that their company did not cover "river water flooding". Many homes went under because the rivers overflowed. Numerous AAMI clients stated they were unaware of the river water clause in their policies.

Suncorp was judged to be moral and ethical while AAMI was judged to be the opposite. Yet the kicker is that Suncorp owns AAMI. So how could brother and sister insurance companies be so different?

IMO the rule of thumb is to seek as much advice as possible before taking out insurance. And spend some time beforehand thinking about the right questions to ask. It doesn't have to be legal advice. Organisations such as Choice can be very helpful. Even if there is a cost (which I understand might be difficult for some to meet), the eventual benefits are very likely to outway the disadvantages and help people to make a more informed choice..

I asked about pet insurance years ago and the first thing I was asked was how old were my pets.  Only one was eligible to take out pet insurance - the rest were too old (and I'm not talking about 10 plus years).

I realised then that pet insurance was a waste of money.

Tell me about it. Try taking out insurance for goldfish and guinea pigs.

I used to keep tanks of fish.  It never occurred to me to ask about insurance for them.

I read somewhere that despite the huge amount of pet insurance adverts, there are basically only two companies that actually underwrite it.  Perhaps there should be more competition to get a better product.
