Chris Bowen Struggles To Name Tax-Free Threshold

Federal opposition treasurer Chris Bowen has been accused of not knowing a key area of his portfolio after he was unable to identify Australia's tax-free threshold during a live television interview on Tuesday night.

Repeatedly pressed by talkback host Alan Jones to outline Australia's tax levels, Mr Bowen was unable to identify the $18,200 figure as Australia's tax-free threshold.

In the fumbling interview on Sky News, Mr Bowen appeared visibly uncomfortable as Jones pressured him to prove his knowledge of Australia's tax structure.

Jones eventually gave the shadow treasurer the answer, before berating his credentials as would-be treasurer.

"This is a serious issue. The man wants to be the treasurer of Australia but he doesn't know the tax thresholds."

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten conceded Mr Bowen had made a mistake but suggested it was the result of a late night interview at the end of a "long day".

(this from ol' "I don't know what she said but I support whatever it is that she said")

"Chris does know the tax free threshold of $18,200, he certainly at the end of a long day at 8.30 last night went into an interview with Alan Jones, I think that's a sign of his commitment, I probably think of other things he could do on a Tuesday night at 8.30 than be interviewed by Alan Jones but he did," he told reporters in Melbourne.

It follows a similar gaffe made by the new Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk who couldn't name the rate of the GST. The State Labor leader later blamed the mistake on not having enough coffee that morning.

Where's the Media outrage and derision for these gaffes by the Opposition? Oh it was a lack of sleep or a lack of coffee.

No such consideration would apply to Mr Abbott and his team, of course.

according to all the posts I've made in this thread, I am not outraged

What about you?

Well seeing it's my thread, why wouldn't I comment here?

I too find it amusing the range of excuses the ALP supporters can find if one of their ownministers make a silly gaffe.

Yet can haul the LNP Prime Minister through the media for days on end for even just winking.

It's not your thread.

Yeah it's my thread

It's a public thread on an ebay forum.

Yes it's my thread on a public ebay forum.

Starting a thread on a public forum does not give ownership of that thread.

Yes it's my thread on a public forum and anyone can comment on it because it's a public forum and I started this thread on this public forum so it's my thread.

You've got to be kidding.  Campbell Newman did not answer the GST question either. Where is the outrage about that?

And btw, the conversation with Jones was about super so it's understandable that the guest was somewhat thrown by a question unrelated to the subject.

It was a simple straightforward question, that an opposition treasurer should have known the answer to.

I guess with ppl like that is why they deny there's a budget deficit crisis.

If it had've been Joe Hockey, the lampooning and caricatures would have been in all the media for a week at least.

That does not make sense. First Bowen is the Shadow Treasurer of Australia and tax thresholds should be well known to him. Second,  superannuation tax and tax thresholds are not exactly removed from each other.

Shorten is the 'Opposition Leader' ? what happened to Palmer?

Would that be this  Shorten 2014: Who in three interviews over 72 hours, claimed the Chinese government has imposed new tariffs on Australian iron ore. There are no Chinese tariffs on Australian iron ore.

Despite the blunder being reported on the front page of The Australian today, Mr Shorten repeated the error this morning during an interview on ABC Radio.

Mr Shorten told interviewer Chris Uhlmann: “What I’m not hearing though is what’s happened with the new tariffs that China placed on our iron ore, what is happening with regard to sugar, what is also happening with regard labour mobility agreements.

Uhlmann then asked: “What tariffs on our iron ore? I’m aware of ones on coal, but not on iron ore.
