A coalition government will have a strong relationship with Indonesia and work towards reintroducing the Howard era policy of turning back asylum seeker boats, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott insists.
Former Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull on Monday admitted the coalition's policy to turn back boats could be unsafe without Indonesian cooperation.
Indonesia's foreign minister and ambassador to Australia have both publicly rejected the idea.
Mr Abbott on Tuesday reiterated that a coalition government would reinstate former prime minister John Howard's asylum seeker policies.
Mr Abbott avoided directly commenting on Mr Turnbull's comments about returning boats to Indonesia.
'I don't accept the premise of the question,' he said.
