She is an A grade bucket mouth and  nutter BUT does this idea of hers hold merit

Is it a  good idea or not

Me i like the idea

Lots of benefits would come from it and it would help a lot of unemployed youth get some experience, some training and even some pride in themselves

Why does my hypothetical student doctor need to know how to use weapons, tanks, bazookas? I would have thought it would be better for us all if he/she spent their time learning how to mend those your military maimed.

There is a TV show called MASH - it was about medical units during the Korean war.

It was fiction, but there were times when it really would have been handy if some of the doctors knew how to use more than a scalpel.

unexploded bombs, tanks left in the compound drawing enemy fire, (so they tried to move the tank so the enemy would stop shooting up the hospital - and ran over about 10 buildings such as the mess hall, toilets and sleeping quarters

I think if you are on the front line, in war, if that is anything to go by, even if it isn't "your job", there may be more skills that will come in handy than knowing how to stitch and cut.

Every young American person used to do some compulsory public service.  I can't remember what it was called.  Do they still do this?

It gave them a rounded view of life before they embarked on further studies.

I have met lots of medical students, and almost all of them had a pathetic narrow privileged view of society.  Not good for someone who will be serving the general population..

Now, in Queensland anyway, medical students have to do a couple of years of other subjects before they enrol in medicine.

what about medical personell who are employed by the military? They train doctors and use them too, ya know?

I don't think that generalisation is applicable only to medical students, Most kids are like that - I call it naievity. It generally wears off a bit as the kids receive more real life experience away from the safe cocoon of their school and neighbourhood.

Nu-uh..........You're probably referring to the draft (AKA selective service)...........every American male was required to register for SS at the age of 18, but there were many exemptions.........married, in college, physical or mentally incapacitated........or if you knew someone, you could get your kid deferred.  My brother for instance, was dating the daughter of a Venezualan diplomat, and wanted to go visit her in her homeland.  The doctor who gave him his draft physical determined that an cut to his left hand would prevent him from shooting a rifle, so he got a 4-F deferment.  The doc happened to be of Venezualan descent.

I believe the Swiss have compulsory military service for able bodied males (and females who wish to participate) that leads to a sort of Army Reserve.

I'm in two minds about the subject.

The Defence force is not only "bullets".   There are chefs, drivers, carpenters, medics, logistics, etc.  The Army Reserve assist in domestic catasrophies - floods, fires, searches, and so on.

Some 18 year olds, don't know what they "want to do when they grow up".  Maybe a hands on experience brings a passion they had not considered.

Conscription

Switzerland has mandatory military service for all able-bodied male citizens, who are conscripted when they reach the age of majority,[25] though women may volunteer for any position.[26] People determined unfit for service, where fitness is defined as "satisfying physically, intellectually and psychically requirements for military service or civil protection service and being capable of accomplishing these services without harming oneself or others",[27] are exempted from service but pay a 3% additional annual income tax until the age of 30, unless they are affected by a disability.[28] Almost 20% of all conscripts were found unfit for military or civilian service in 2008; the rate is generally higher in urban cantons such as Zurich and Geneva than in the rural ones.[29]

On September 22, 2013, a referendum was held that aimed to abolish conscription in Switzerland.[32] With a turnout of 47.0% on this particular question, over 73% voted against eliminating conscription.

Israel also has mandatory service, but there are a large number of exemptions.

According to the Defense Service Law, the enlistment to the Israeli Defense Forces is mandatory for all Israeli citizens who have turned 18 (with the above-mentioned exemptions enshrined in the Defense Service Law).

isreal tend to always be at war though, don't they?

They are in a pretty volatile environment and circumstance. It would make sense to me if they were always on high alert, as without googling, I think they are always at high risk of conflict.

so if your unemployed you have no self worth...hahahahahahahahahhhaaaahahahahahahahahahaaa...on the other hand some have waaaaaay too much "self worth" for no apparent reason bar an over inflated ego. Don't suppose lamb or maybe abetz have been visiting Germany recently, the ‘work sets you free’  sign from outside Dachau has been stolen.

really have to speak to my Aunt who needs her hearing aids checked as she thought lamb said compulsory military service for the fat and over 50 - could be helpful in combating our increasing levels of obesity and diabetes.

Yeah, let's give some of these angry young men the skills to use lethal weapons.  A splendid idea.

yes and when they get out and there are still no jobs available we will have a large number of people trained in the art of killing still unemployed, yipeeeee....still those that like to call the jobless bludgers and other horrible names might think twice.

No, the army does not train doctors, if by "train" you mean educate them for 6 or 8 years to get a degree.

I did not generalise about medical students, it was an emperical comment.  They used to be from a privileged background only, and had no knowledge of the common man, and they were not "kids".  They were men and women aged 24.

Now that acceptance to medicine is based on different criteria, that attitude is changing,
