I think the trouble is that a lot of dating starts online these days.
Back when I was young, there was no such thing as the internet and people went to dances at the local town halls or in towards the city. Or people met at parties. There was the capacity even back then for people to deceive. I still remember the shock we had when we learnt our best man had had a girlfriend for months and had been telling his wife he was working overtime. The girlfriend was a lovely woman, I met her later and she had had no idea he was married with a child. So he hurt a lot of people.
But these days if people don't want to go to bars and don't meet people at work, then internet dating seems to be the go. I suppose people have to have some trust but just be cautious and especially don't hand over any money and, as the journalist said, watch for any red flags.
Yes, the man in the article would still be out there playing his games, I'm sure.
