I still don't agree, that private company using the prisoners for just about free labour is (imo) rotten, there is call centre work in Australia, that company should have to hire people - its not correct to say that all job centre work has gone off shore. Search online, it exists as casual and part-time mostly. I know quite a lot of people not long out of uni that do it along with bar work to get by.
Education or work done by volunteers is a better choice.

totally agree with martini, the more employment skills a prisoner has the less they are likely to reoffend. Most people end up in prison because they never had any education or opportunity, re educating is the way to go

It isn't a new thing, prisoners (those who have shown excellent behaviour) with jobs for a nominal payment while in prison. They have free board and food. The payment is a bonus, along with work skills for those who don't have any.
They don't work 8 hour days.

"they don't work 8 hrs a day" and this means what? I'm in WA, the largest proportion of people in prison here are Aboriginal, most of them are the children of the stolen generation, they don't go to school and see themselves as having no future so they turn to crime. If only one of them is turned around and finds employment and a life to look forward to then it's all worth it.
