Court bans nutty-name Nutella

A FRENCH court has blocked parents from naming their baby girl after the hazelnut spread Nutella, arguing it would make her the target of mockery.

A registrar recording the baby’s birth last September flagged the unusual name to local prosecutors who took it to a family court judge, the prosecutor’s office told AFP, confirming a story in the Voix du Nord newspaper.

The parents did not attend the court hearing and the judge decided in their absence to rename the baby Ella.

“The name ‘Nutella’ corresponds to the commercial name of a spread. And it is against the child’s interest to be saddled with a name that could only lead to mockery and unkind remarks,” said the judgement.

We agonised over choosing names for our three sons. What sounded good with our surname, what they might be shortened or lengthened to, what their initials would be, what famous (or infamous) associations they may have, etc, etc.

As soon as they hit school all three were called by a shortened version of our last name, and two still are!  You can't win Woman Very Happy

Why on earth parents give their children ridiculous names? They don't realise that those cute little children have to grow up into adults and be burdened with a name they will eventually be ashamed of, or even hate the parents for having been so thoughtless and selfish just to be different.

My father did not even allow my mother to give my brother or me more than one christian name. He said 'a person is only ever called by one name, so why give them two or three.'

My first husband was called Joseph, Johannes, Conrad, Karl.

All his life he was known a Joe.

One of my children has what was an unusual name, at the time... but has now become popular.

The reason for more than one Christian name is because many people end up with the same names, they can be identified then by a middle name.

Lucky me, I have 2 middle names....................2 of my daughters also have 2, the rest of my children have 1 middle name.

My stepsons all have two names. One is Graham George. His initials have been a cause of being called Gee-gee or Horse.

One son with two names has the initials C D. His name was given to him before anyone even thought of computers and related things.

Well, my previous family name was Thomas. Lots of my craft work, especially pottery items still have the initials E T. I even had an E T avatar when I got my first computer.

I also find it funny how some of the names are spelt. Same name, different spelling. Reminds me of the scene from Kath & Kim.

My married - family name - is so long - almost all the letters.

My daughter got no middle name - with the understanding - it would not fit on a credit card.
