DDU can I ask you about your chooks? You do have chooks don't you?
Roughly what sort of cage do you have i.e. wooden? How many chooks & what/how much do you feed them? I searched chook houses on ebay, do you suggest a good one?

Klarry what is needed to fox proof a chook house? We were thinking wire underneath and perhaps sleepers too? Are snakes & rats a problem?

Any information would be good ๐Ÿ™‚

And my daughter and I want silky. They look so cute.

Local pet and farm supply shop lady have them but she doesn't sell them. She sells ordinary red hens. Silky lay eggs too. Just a bit small.

I have 6 silkies, 2 silkie x's, a Polish hen .. they lay eggs that are between 20 - 35g and they're mostly yolk. They are really nice in salads but mainly I just put then in the incubator and make little silkies with the eggs. They are small, cute and quiet. I don't have a crower amongst them so the roosters don't have to end up in the pot.

Reading in the Burkes backyard fact sheet it says Chinese silkies are docile, easy to handle and great for kids & novices.

I wasn't impressed by what it said about Isa's either..

How much room do chooks need to roam?

What about the pooping everywhere?

Will they peck my vege garden to pieces?

MOrning Clair.de.lune!

If you have a local "Petbarn" shop in your vicinity, they have an excellent range of "caged" chook pens with chicken runs. I know the term "caged" sounds awful but just being descriptive as they are meant to be "feral" proof.

ONe of the lovely houses had wiring running across the bottom and mesh.

Wish I could have chooks....:-(
I'd rather be hated for who/what I am rather than be loved for what I'm not.

I have a flock of 10 Isa's, and they're very friendly girls. They're a bit nasty to new girls, but nothing more than sorting out the pecking order.

Thanks cheekyone I'm not sure we have a petbarn but I will look into it, we have a pet stock..

Yeah panda I was talking to a guy yesterday who comes into town selling Isa's, he said they've a good temperament of course then I read on burkes backyard: Though they are quiet, placid and child-friendly, these hybrids are bossy, even aggressive, with fowls of other breeds. Theyโ€™re not a good addition to a mixed chook shed at all!

See we already have the ones given to us and I'm not even sure what breed that is?

I liked how it said silkies are docile and good for novices and children ๐Ÿ™‚
