US government had much more to do with Osama than Hicks. Terrorist is somebody who perpetrates terrorist act. Terrorist act is usually act of violence done for political reason. Taliban, as unpleasant their attitude is too us, are just a part of Afghanistan society involved NOW in civil war against government supported militarily by the west. That was not the way it was when Hicks went there. We were not involved in Afghanistan then.
Misguided young people always looked at religious alternatives; In the past when kids got sucked into some religious cult we used feel sorry for them and tried to extricate them. Now, when somebody gets involved in Islam we turn on them like pack of rabid dogs. Very sad.
