As it's more than 100 days now, it has been suggested that a new thread was needed. The current govt has been breaking promises and telling lies at a rate so fast it's hard to keep up.![]()
This below is worrying, "independent" pffft, as if your own doctor is somehow what? biased, it's ridiculous. So far there is talk of only including people under a certain age 30-35, for now. Remember that if your injured in a car, injured at work or get ill, you too might need to go on the DSP. They have done a similar think in the UK with devastating consequences.
and this is the 2nd time recently where the Govt has referred to work as welfare???? So when you go to work tomorrow (or tuesday), just remember that's welfare.

Independent doctors could be called in to reassess disability pensioners, Federal Government says
The Federal Government is considering using independent doctors to examine disability pensioners and assess whether they should continue to receive payments.
Currently family doctors provide reports supporting claims for the Disability Support Pension (DSP).
But Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is considering a measure that would see independent doctors reassess eligibility.
"We are concerned that where people can work, the best form of welfare is work," Mr Andrews said at a press conference.

CS: "In the interests of balance, here are a couple more local commentators:"
Angela McCormack from Pedestrian Group Pty Ltd, a writer, editor and student from Sydney.
Joanna Robin from MAMAMIA? It’s the largest independent women’s website in Australia.
Right, balance? sorry that should be: Left balance? I must admit CS the above "sources" are not exactly on my horizon. I just thought that I would pick a well known and published media site with a good circulation and readership (NOT the DT), and the Age and Mark Kenny credentials seemed perfect MYOP fare.
There has to be some reason why insignificant sources and a major one (NYT) spout the same selective/restricted story whilst studiously avoiding what is plain to see, that refugee drowning deaths have virtually been eliminated, and the "turn back the boats" is now bipartisan policy.
Perhaps a world renowned newspaper like the NYT might editorialise about the deaths that could well be heaped upon the shoulders of Rudd as a result of his ending the Pacific Solution in 2008, (he did end it D9275).

you raise a good point there myo and besides, refugee deaths at sea have not stopped, they never stopped, the responsibility was just moved away from our shores

did you know that Mark Kenny and Chris Kenny are cousins?
Where The New York Times is correct, however, is in condemning the undemocratic secrecy associated with the incarceration of asylum seekers languishing in Nauru and PNG. Ditto for its reference to the moral ambiguities - first reported by Fairfax Media - of paying people smugglers to return to port.

Properties compulsorily acquired to make way for the East West Link will be used to house homeless people.
The government will hand over 20 houses to the Collingwood Football Club's Magpie Nest program, which provides accommodation and support to people sleeping rough or living in unsafe rooming houses.
It follows Premier Daniel Andrews earlier this year saying the properties compulsorily acquired could be used to support some of Victoria's most needy.
The handover comes amid enormous pressure on the Victorian public housing system, with the waiting list recently reaching 34,000.
