Because he is a man of his word or because he didn’t want to be PM when labor suffered a huge defeat
My money is on that he will challenge for leader ship after the election and go back on his word

I prefer to believe what he said......

If Gillard loses the election, she may resign the leadership, in which case the position will become vacant and the party may ask Rudd to nominate - thereby fulfilling all the conditions which he said would be necessary before he would do so.

I have heard that this is a tactic to humiliate Rudd and make it look like Gillard has the full support of the ALP mp's...
Word is that Rudd did not ask for this to happen... it was "forced" upon him... and all his backers were suckered in....
I also hear that no one wants Gillard but no one wants her job...

gossip is just that.

No one with a brain would want the job at this time.
who would want to be at the top when such a loss occurs
Much wiser to take the position after the huge loss.

I'm feeling sorry for Nero - she must be tying herself in knots trying to decide whether to feel gutted that Julia didn't get dumped or relieved that Rudd won't be leading Labor into the election.

Why? Gillard and labor have done so much damage to them selves yet again and proved just how much of a shambles they are as a party.
It couldn’t have worked out better for Tony Abbott.
Labor is still led by Julia Gillard, electoral poison.
Kevin Rudd, Labor’s only hope, has been badly wounded.
Both are still in the Labor party, guaranteeing further instability.
And Labor loses one of its few adults in the Ministry. Simon Crean.
Bye bye Labor come September or sooner. Hopefully sooner
The only problem is just how much damage will they do to this country before they are finally booted out
