Do you think its fair that your life chances and success in the world is largely determined by who you are born to?
How could you ever have equality in life amongst the masses if this factor plays such a massive role right from the start?

Interesting topic, but it's a bit like saying "how long is a piece of string" I understand where your coming from, but Life is not always easy and sometimes you have to play the hand your dealt. What erks me most are the people who throw the "Victim " card in the air every time. I had a bad childhood, or it wasn't me or I really didn't mean to , blah blah. We all have choices.

Do we really?

do you actually believe that, bob? that who you are now is based on who your parents were/are?

Bob, What was the reasoning behind the topic? I'm getting the feeling there is more to the question than just, "is it fair" Please elaborate. 🙂

Fair, as in, if your parents are famous, you get to live in a nice house? Then what? Look at how many children of Famous people end up killing themselves.
Trust fund kids? I guess they do get material things handed to them. They might not ever know poverty. Many of them work very long hours though... and they often have a heavy burden on their shoulders to become wealthy on their own.
Fair, as in, how come this person has a crack addict mother, and a dad in jail? The other person is the son of a King?
I don't even see how fair comes into that. It's just the way life is.... and I accept that I'm not the daughter of a Queen. Actually, I'm happy that I'm not that.
Rise above adversity. Appreciate your privileges. That's about the best that can come out of any childhood.
My childhood wasn't too happy. I'm very happy now.
Many people who came from nothing, are able to claw their way up to the top. Quite often, children surpass their parents financially. I'm not as wealthy as my mom, but I'm a lot happier than she ever was.
We do have choices- once we leave the apron strings of our parents. Your childhood shouldn't define your existence for the rest of your life.

I don't think my life chances had anything to do with who I was born to.

How deeply are we to think on this Bob?
It would be a robotic type of life, if we were all equal.
But we would still need someone "more equal" than us to push the buttons and re-charge the batteries.

I've often pondered that, Bob. Wondering if I'd been born to different parents in a different environment I might have turned out differently and made better choices in life.
It's true life life presents us with opportunities over and over again, but I think we accept or reject according to attitudes formed in our childhood that we may not even be conciously aware of.
There are external influences we have no control over, but I think we react to them according to the personality traits and ubringing we receive from our parents
As a younger person I thought it not fair, but the point is moot, really.
Lately I've caught myself doing and saying a lot of things my mother used to, and sometimes I even see her looking back at me when I look in the mirror.

Just look at the Royal family. Do you think Willaim and Harry would be where they are simply being born into the blood line?
