Does it bother you if threads go off topic?

Or if people make off topic posts in threads?

Twinks, that's what I've been wondering about, who has the right to judge what is off topic or not?

the OP of the thread perhaps?

the participants of the thread who want to discuss what the OP is actually about?

i started a thread and specifically asked that the posts stick to the subject in my OP and gave the reason why I asked that, of course that didn't happen.

Is it wrong to expect that a thread started for a specific purpose be kept on that topic?

I see that as like a seller stating all their own terms which though they have stated them actually mean nothing if they don't comply with the sites policies?

it has nothing to do with selling, its like comparing apples and oranges.

I will try to explain so that you can understand ..setting your own terms of what you want posters to post and not post in a thread you start may be as meaningless as a seller setting their own terms that they must be paid within 24hrs,must be paid in cash.Smiley Happy

I agree with pepe, there is no correlation between a OP of a thread, requesting people be mindful of the intent/topic of the thread & asking potential posters to please stick to the topic and a seller including conditions for the buyers in their listing that contravene eBay sellling policy.

I have had posters even tell me that I am not on topic and can't post in a thread as I wasn't born in the time the OP mentions...

1920/30-1980's I think.....I continually said I was born in the late 60's.

My opinion differed on my preference for the here and now rather than what the OP suggested was best...the good old days....I was not off topic, regardless of when I was born I had a right to post and those members telling me otherwise in so many not so nice ways had and still have the problem and it was them who should have had vacations not me .

i understood and i still say its comparing apples and oranges.

my request to keep to my original topic was only meaningless to those with no consideration or self control. 🙂

Nothing will ever change if posters keep referring to/bringing up the past... past threads, past posts.Smiley Frustrated

If posts don't get removed, they don't contravene posting rules. Why would anyone have a problem with them then?

Not on my mine.

A3 perhaps it would be helpful if you stopped discussing your idea of off topic in so many threads. That's just a suggestion.

The thread you are referring to, where you requested members stick to the topic, DID NOT start on this, the CS board.

You started that thread on the New Community Experience (NCE) board. Being on topic on THAT board is relevant.

http://community.ebay.com.au/t5/New-Community-Experience/Suggestions-for-Improvements-for-the-way-the-Board-Functions/td-p/566280

It is not relevant on CS where the stated aim of the board is to: "Talk with fellow members about non eBay related topics."

If you are cross with how members replied to you on the other board, perhaps you need to take it to the other board rather than using it as an example of what happens on CS, where being off topic is actually the function of this board because this board doesn't HAVE A TOPIC!

Yes, it did.

I think it is generally accepted that CS Board doesn't have a topic (excluding ebay related posts.. buying and selling etc).

Threads have topics.. not all, some are general drop in chat threads, long running ones.

If a thread is about, for example,  a sick child who was possibly poisoned by its mother.. how can that not be the topic of the thread.?

Do people need to engage in petty spats, talk about what they did yesterday in threads like that?
