Thousands of people living on welfare in subsidised public housing are falling behind in rent.
Now, governments are grabbing a slice of their welfare payments to make them pay up and some aren't too happy.

I see no problem with their rent being taken out automatically. My house repayment comes out automatically....so why not their rent.

People in subsidised housing should have their rent paid directly, before receiving benefits.

My sister is living in emergency accomodation (for over 2 years now ๐ ) aand her rent is paid by centrepay, she wasnt given a choice about it. I think its a great idea. I set all her utilities up on centrepay for her too, its the first time in her life she's been able to pay her bills on time and not have a debt collector chasing her.

Some people just can't manage money. They sometimes need help. Good on you for helping her. It's like garnishee (sp.) of wages for others. If they don't have it, they don't spend it.

Sorry, didn't read your post properly. Emergency accommodation. Not usually the fault of the person that requires it. Not necessarily one who has spent their money foolishly. Again, sorry. Hope it works out for them in the long run.

maybe every renter should have the same set-up, then nobody could say it wasn't fair.

Does the rental system work.. what do you mean? That it is left up to the tenant to pay the rent every week to the owner or RE agency? What would be another option... direct debit?

well it just seem's that if those on welfare living in Public housing (I think that is what is meant) should have their rent taken out of the benefit before they receive it, why not, in the interest's of fairness that all people renting have the same thing happen.
I was at a function on Saturday morning and quite a few of the folks there owned rental properties, they were chatting about some terrible tenant problems, mainly rent arrears.
