Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he believes a meeting between federal, state and territory leaders is the best forum to tackle domestic violence.
His comment follows a call by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten in January for a national crisis summit on the issue so survivors, police, child protection officers, women's shelter staff, judges and federal, state and territory leaders could devise a national plan.
Seventeen in every 100 Australian women has faced violence from a current or previous partner, and on average one is killed each week.
"It's a national disgrace," Mr Shorten told reporters in Canberra.
What do you think needs to see changed ??

Try addressing the person instead of snide remarks.

And trying to make mileage out of the fact it is held where it is by SELECTIVELY quoting parts of an article
Makes certain people look like "full blown fusterclucks"
Especially when it is pointed out that it was WOMEN who organised the event, location etc.
Labor members also looked fools.
For your information, there was no quote in the post you responded to.
I don't care who organized the event. A club that does not allow women's membership is no place to host an International Women's Day event.
The only fools are those who have no idea why that is so and members of parliament who laugh about how funny it is that men will let the women in for one day.

Well, how about they just dont hold the event at all.
In any case, in your own words, just what is wrong with a club that doesnt allow membership ???
I look forward to your reply.
It's not about the fact that men have clubs exclusively for them. It's about having a women's celebration day in a men only club. I think that is the issue. Regardless of who booked it, it is a ridiculous situation. And the PM's offensive diatribe during question time which was embarrassing to him doesn't help with put downs of women.

Also that they left it so late to organise the event ( even though International Women's Day is on the same date every year), they had very little choice left of places where it could be held (at short notice).

throwing money at this topic is not going to do any good, whilst emergency shelters are a life saver for some and should not be closed, there is never going to be enough.
This problem has to be attacked at the grass roots level - education of girls that their value is not dependant on whether they have a man, any man, in their life, and vice versa, educate them that a person teaches another how to treat them, teach them the first sign of domestic violence is a deal breaker - get the hell out.
Teach them to respect themselves so they will not allow anyone to victimise them.
Its all very well to tell abusers to not abuse, but victims need to have the knowledge and ability to not continue to be abused.

Agree, it doesn't exactly look good for women or their organisational skills.
I wonder if the Lyceum Club said no to holding the event, they are very selective.
"It's about having a women's celebration day in a men only club. "
I think its being blown out of all proportion. Men only, women only, same same.

Yes, I'm sure you do see it as being blown out of all proportion because you would, wouldn't you. I was prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt till you put the boot in to women. Again.

Wow, not the immage I had of Austrailans at all. Learning much from posting here. I hope they don't blame the victims there the way they do here.
The police and various agencys here have me down as a ticking timebomb that could snap at any moment. I have not lived on Casa for 2 years and someone told me even still, if an ambulance is called and needed, it takes nearly an hour longer because sheriffs have to make shure it safe there for them to approach Safe from me! OMG, they keep asking are they sure i'm not there.
From what i'm told. It's how they have me in their records i guess. Sickining, i never put my hands on anyone ever, not even when i am being beat up on, like at the shelter, I get attacked, and cops say i'm the attacker. Thing is no one believes the cops ould do this. Like the attorney i spoke with today. It's why I can't get an apartment, pass any background check, ect.
I don't know how it is there, but here, seems even a minor family squabble and police will blow it way outta proportion, they do this to justify their jobs and feel like big shots saving the day, and in my case always arrest the wrong person.
