Elizabeth Is On Her Way

In dozens of parts, the smallest of which still dwarfing the Port of Newcastle dock workers charged with unloading her onto trucks, Elizabeth is now being trucked by police escort to Bella Vista, where she will be reassembled ready for work. It will take nearly 50 truck trips to make the voyage, which will take place mostly at night. The heaviest part delivered is the 131-tonne front-drive or gearbox, while the longest single delivery is a steel gantry measuring more than 13 metres. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/the-hills/first-of-the-north-west-rail-link-mega-drills-a... Elizabeth Is On Her Way

Noticed on the news the other night, that the trucks were stopped for the usual vehicle inspections that are carried out on all trucks.

Can't remember specifically, but a couple of problems were found.  Weight distribution issues? (I have my ownSmiley Happy)

What a journey for the "drill".  From France to China where she was tested(?) Thence to Newcastle Harbour.

Exciting times for The Hills.  Again.  I can remember tracks crossing Showground Road left over from an earlier time of a rail in the area.

Yes apparently there was a rail connection in the early days, Deb, which was pulled up. There's even a Railway Street in the town centre.

Update:

Elizabeth and North West Rail Link staff get ready for tunnel-boring task at Bella Vista

Elizabeth was in the headlines for the wrong reasons when trucks carrying tunnel-boring machine equipment were grounded by police after not complying with their permit.

But apart from that hiccup, it’s been smooth sailing for Elizabeth, which will start digging the tunnel by the end of October.

“Safety is our top priority, including in truck transportation, and it is a credit to the contractor to replace the truck provider, which is a positive step,” Mr Staples said.

“(Getting Elizabeth here) is a really big milestone for the project.”

A cutter-head at the front of the tunnel-boring machines will chew through rocks and dirt, which will be filtered through the tunnel-boring machine and then put on a conveyor belt that will transport all the rubble to the Bella Vista construction site.

Fifteen workers will control Elizabeth at a time for eight-hour shifts as she digs for 24 hours daily.
