The new Dad and Partner Pay comes into effect today under changes made to the Paid Parental Leave Act, allowing fathers to take government-funded time off for their newborns, sharing the primary carer's responsibilities and offering more support.
Eligible fathers will be paid about $606 per week before tax at the rate of the current national minimum wage - and this could be on top of any paid parental leave being received by the mother or other family assistance being received.

I have mobile wireless broadband at present and it can be pretty hopeless at times (congestion), but mostly it works fine.

If a person says I don't think the Govt (which is in deficit) can afford to pay out an extra benefit (for Dads/partners) and then practically in the next breath they personally want better internet, they say they are enttitled to it and don't care how much it costs, how much it takes to get it etc, then they are contradticting themselves.
There are still lots of areas in Aust that don't have ADSL2, they only have slower ADSL, higher costs per GB and there are people/students in those areas who are successful at school and Uni and whatever they need to do their online work/business.
We have ADSL at work and it is slow as a snail but we are still able to do the online stuff we need too.
RECAP: This thread is actually about a new benefit payable to Dads/partners.
For starters - I pay for my internet usage, not the government, and I consider it to be so important for our chosen lifestyle that I am prepared to pay whatever it costs to use it.
I don;t have the option of cable or broadband at this address - until now I have only been able to have wireless with a limit of 15GB a month until we shape out - but even the fast speed is unreliable as if the wind is blowing the wrong way, we don't get a signal, or it might drop out half way through a session etc. (I've told you the name of the product in the internet thread) I have now been offered ADSL2 - I have never been able to have the option of ADSL or anything else other than wireless at this address.
capiche?

I agree wholeheartedly, which is why they are restricted, however, it also means we can't download lecture capture which is part of the uni education and the kids can't download their school classes at home if they want to revisit them or access their live tutorials. I don't know the fancy terms but for a lot of their subjects, they have online study groups, led by their teacher - sort of like video skype.

If you're on a 15GB fixed wireless plan you have broadband.

I just grew up learning that if you can't afford to pay for something, then you wait until you can...... I just can't see how we can add any more expenses regardless of our perceived entitlements, when it is evident that we cannot independently finance those to which we are already committed. If we could, then we wouldn't have a deficit.
I grew up learning that too .I was also taught 'the I'm alright Jack' is really kind of selfish and that it is the same applied both in our own Country and Overseas.
It was also joked by a few adults of the time that if I couldn't afford what I wanted or wanted to do I could marry a rich man lol

Agree with freaki. You seem to be very confused as to different types of internet.
You don't need to explain anything to me about slow interent/ high cost of GB's either. As I have posted earlier, I have exactly the same problems in my location re internet as you do many other areas in Aust. Also I have posted that people/students do survive with outdated/slow internet service, even though there is no ADSL2 here and never will be I expect (as the NBN is in progress here.). It is frustrating but not the end of the world.
