First Contact

Did anyone watch "First Contact" on SBS last night and/or the reaction on NITV? It's a three part series in which a group of people who have had no contact with Indigenous people spend time in various Aboriginal communities over a period of 28 days. I was shaking my head at the rudeness and ignorance of some of the participants.

"the big picture from the early days until now".

I cannot do anything about the early days. I agree, the Aboriginals were treated terribly then.

As I said earlier, with each generation things (hopefully) seem to be getting better, but it requires effort from BOTH SIDES.

But I also maintain that the 'stolen generation' are much better off than had they been left with their parents.

and, before you go off at me ... yes, I know they missed out on their heritage and all that .... but, all in all, much better off - better educated, better opportunities etc.

I just had a look back at my posts - I said $680 all the way along..... not $700??

and, it was for a 4 bedroom house - $80 fortnight

I think you misunderstood.  They are not talking about rental assistance but somebody who lives in housing commission house.  Anybody who lives in housing commission place, black or white, does not get rental assistance, but they only pay certain % of their income/pension.  So if somebody who gets the dole, $80 sounds about right = 1/3 of the money they get?    Not to mention that just because it is a house and has 4 bedrooms that does not mean it is great.  I have seen some of these places, and they are in such a condition that I would not allow my dogs to be housed like that.

better off? I can't see that.

Being taken from a loving family cannot be made up for by the pretence of education or opportunity. If they were taken from neglectful or abusive homes, it may be different but most were not.

But it didn't turn out that way, did it.  There are generations of people who are still suffering because they were stolen or their children were stolen or both.  It's not soemthing most people get over easily or overnight, which is what we seem to expect of them as your comment confirms.

They were taken away from families who couldn't look after them - why? because they were drunks, abusers or worse. If I had been a drunk and abused my children they would have been taken away too.

I don't even agree with the WAY in which it was done. There should have been some arrangements as far as visitations etc, but, I cannot do anything about that now.

I do not agree with what happened to some of them afterwards - some were taken into, dare I say it, Catholic and or Protestant care homes - I don't envy those poor buggars one bit. But the ones who were adopted by families and brought up well - are better off than if they had been left with their parents.

I'm glad you said 'there are generations of people' because that includes the Irish, English and others who were 'stolen' from their parents. And there were generations of so called orphans that were stolen too. There were generations of babies 'stolen'. All manner of things went on back then . It's not JUST the Aboriginals you know.

No, that has been proven to be incorrect. First we were told they were half white children who were taken, that wasn't the truth either.

and Who made them that way? And who keeps them that way? If a tenant wants something fixed, they only have to ask. I lived in one for 5 years, I know. BUT it is up to the tenant to keep them clean and not punch holes in the walls etc.

While we were living in our Housing Commission, we had an Indiginous Family move in at the back of us. Since the day they moved in - beer cans thrown over the fence, eggs thrown at the house, fences peed on, windows broken, swearing and fights ..... you name it.

Now tell me there are good and bad in all races. Of course there are, but I have personal evidence of at least 5 Indigenous families that acted the same way. That was 5 out of the 5 that I knew.

And Yes, there were white families that were the same but the odds were very different.

And why do you think the houses might be in such terrible condition?

Public housing may not be built to luxury standard but they would not have been shacks when they were new.

Is it perhaps that the tennants do not look after them?
