The national Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has today begun its second hearing into the Catholic Church's handling of abuse claims.
The two-week hearing in Sydney will examine a landmark case that established what is known as the "Ellis defence", which suggests the Church is not liable for the criminal conduct of clergy.
The case of John Ellis, a former altar boy whose claim of sexual abuse by Father Aidan Duggan in the 1970s, was initially dealt with under the church's Towards Healing process established in 1996.
Royal Commission chief executive Janette Dines says the hearing will focus on the experiences of Mr Ellis.
"This hearing will be an opportunity for the Royal Commission to examine the response of the Catholic Church to Mr
Ellis's claim, including the application of Towards Healing and the circumstances in which the Catholic Church raised
what is commonly referred to as the Ellis defence," Ms Dines said

I hope that he is grilled until he explains why he turned a blind eye to the peodophile priests. Such a cold soulless person.

Pell is just what I would expect a Archbishop to be. guess he doesn't disappoint. they don't get where they are without turning a complete blind eye to what's going on.

What they need , and what they probably needed all along is an outside administrator for dealing with offenders and so on. if you believe a person can confess and all is fine, then how can you judge effectively when its a matter for the police ? obviously it isn't possible .. the two don't really reconcile or mesh . its the same reason democracy is secular or at least should be.

Personalities aside re. this same issue with ALL institutional leaders that are/were aware of others under their authority taking advantage of the weak, innocent and defenceless.
I say this: If any of them really believe in a Heaven and a Hell I truly hope they all rot in the latter.

As one of the victims and after giving evidence at the Royal Commission, I can not agree with you more. I for one will never forgive nor forget, it simply is not possible.

Jean I am sorry that happened to you. how awful for you to have to re hash it all. I hope some good comes out of this Commission.

This photo helped to expose the cover-up
Broken Rites believes that this photo (below) raises two questions:
1. WHY did Bishop George Pell accompany Father Gerald Ridsdale to court on 27 May 1993 when Ridsdale received
his first conviction for child-sex crimes?
2. WHY did no bishop, or even a priest, accompany the victims?
