Three years of the sun in three minutes

In the three years since it first provided images of the sun in the spring of 2010, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has had virtually unbroken coverage of the sun's rise toward solar maximum, the ...

THE Sun’s activity has plummeted to a century low, baffling scientists and possibly heralding a new mini-Ice Age.

"I've been a solar physicist for 30 years, and I've never seen anything quite like this," Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, told the

"If you want to go back to see when the Sun was this inactive... you've got to go back about 100 years," he said.

The lull is particularly surprising because the Sun has reached its solar maximum, the point in its 11-year cycle where activity is at its peak.

The lacklustre climax also follows a solar minimum – the period when the Sun’s activity troughs – that was longer and lower than had been anticipated.

Mike Lockwood, professor of space environment physics at the University of Reading, told the BBC there was a significant chance that the Sun could become increasingly quiet.

He compared the current circumstances to the latter half of the 17th Century, when the sun went through an extremely quiet phase referred to as the Maunder Minimum.

That era of solar inactivity coincided with bitterly cold winters to Europe, where the Baltic Sea and London's River Thames froze over. Conditions were so harsh that some described it as a mini-Ice Age.

Prof Lockwood says we may see a repeat if the Sun continues to dip, positing that the results would be dominantly felt in Europe due to the flow of an air current in the upper atmosphere that can drive the weather.

"It's a very active research topic at the present time, but we do think there is a mechanism in Europe where we should expect more cold winters when solar activity is low," he said.

slip slop slap...the Earth still needs it's hat...... the depleted ozone layer especially over the poles means global

warming

.....reagardless of the orb's small fluctuations....

17th century = big Ozone layer "hat"........... 21st century = depleted G string ozone layer hat on a bald head

http://www.naukawpolsce.pap.pl/en/news/news,395025,scientists-ozone-layer-decreases-again.html

In the release sent to PAP, the institute reports that for several years, especially in the summer, scientists have been record lower concentration of ozone in the stratosphere over Belsk. "At the end of 2012 there was a few percent less than would be expected, given the decreasing concentration of pollutants in the stratosphere" - reports the Institute of Geophysics PAS.

"It is possible that a new, yet unidentified local mechanism that reduces the thickness of the protective ozone layer starts to operate in the atmosphere.

Regardless of its nature, it is certain that in the near future, everyone should still be wary of the sun and avoid excessive sunbathing.

And we must continue to monitor the condition of ozone over our heads" - emphasised Head of the Department of Atmospheric Physics, Institute of Geophysics PAS Prof. Janusz Krzyścin.

Oh, stop it you two.  It is too much for my unexercised brain! As long as she keeps coming up tomorrow - I haven't completed my bucket list!.  DEB

Good info Poddy, it seems that the warm mongers have cast around for another spurious reason for "Global Warming" which is a fallacy as there has been no rise in temp for up to 17 years so they have fallen back on the Ozone, which we know has repaired itself many times in thousands of years with no help from humans.

The IPCC is now so discredited that they are laughed at by the real scientists & the so called 6000 scientists they said supported their theory, some were not scientists at all but economist & weather forecasters and any other rent seeker that jumped on  the "Global Warming" waggon.

They have jettisoned the "Global Warming" moniker for the more soft "Climate Change".

Fat bloated billionaires and attention seekers is my opinion * Flannery * is the worst but still the left flocked to his new Climate Commission along with a couple of imported sidekicks and kicked in over a mill to keep this charlatan in the manner to which he has become accustomed.

The more practical direct action to which we will see practical improvement rather than sending $billions of dollars overseas to prop up the totally discredidted carbon trading monolith is a good thing & capped so billions of dollars will not be wasted.

Our economy & jobs market is not looking good & the sooner the toxic CT is gone the better for our coutry.

I had posted many times that weather was related to the sun flares... many people laughed at me and said I was a climate skeptic because I did not think that CO2 was the reason for climate change.

CO2 may make a difference, or it may be that we are just destroying our natural environment enough for climate to be impacted or it may be the sun flares... or it may be all combined...

I have also given links to articles about sun flares and warnings given by reputable organisations that have coincided with climatic events.

But I am just a person against the CO2 tax because I do not think it will help our environment and that makes me a target for those on the left that thought Gillards lie was ok because she was a woman and we should never speak out against her.

Fancy that! having to go back 100 years which is not even the blink of an eyelid for the sun.

Any radio ham could tell you that the sun has always waxed and waned and in doing so affected

conditions on earth which in turn affected the performance fo their radio contacts.

Anyway here is the answer to the great question of weather change.

CM2014: "I had posted many times that weather was related to the sun flares... many people laughed at me and said I was a climate skeptic because I did not think that CO2 was the reason for climate change. "

Allow me to add another  chuckle at you, because what you think is not supported by science. Research "greenhouse effect" CO2, water vapour,  positive feedback, even  our CSIRO and BOM. Then ponder ocean heat content history.

SF: "as there has been no rise in temp for up to 17 years"

Actually the scientific data shows there has been a rise, just not as great as predicted. Produce the evidence SF, NASA, CSIRO, BOM will do. Why exactly do you choose 17 years SF?  Global temperature increase from anthropogenic  emissions started during the industrial revolution and indicate a steady rise when averaged, 17 years is a deliberate cherry-pick

"Global mean surface temperature over the past 20 years (1993–2012) rose at a rate of 0.14 ± 0.06 °C per decade (95% confidence interval). This rate of warming is significantly slower than that simulated by the climate models "

POD:  "THE Sun’s activity has plummeted to a century low. (????) Do you mean in just the 21st century POD? all 14 years of it, or the last 100 years?  If just 14 years, why such a short period?, and if for a 100 years your statement is incorrect.

POD and SF if you are going to debate science,  remember terms like trend over a significant period, or averages over a meaningful time period, you might as well argue winter is colder than summer this past year..

C2BG: "the depleted ozone layer especially over the poles means global warming"
Actually it is the opposite, because with less ozone it  means slightly more heat will be emitted into space.
