Go Dairy-Free To Beat Cancer!

A LEADING scientist who has been fighting breast cancer for more than two decades says the disease is inextricably linked to animal products.

Jane Plant, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, nearly lost all hope when the disease struck her for a fifth time in 1993.

Prof Plant, now 69, began to draw on her experiences working in China, where women have historically shown very low rates of breast cancer. One study from the 1970s showed the disease affected one in 100,000 Chinese women, compared with one in 12 in the West.

“I had checked this information with senior academics,” Prof Plant told the UK Telegraph. “Chinese doctors I knew told me they had hardly seen a case of breast cancer in years. Yet if Chinese women are on Western diets — if they go to live in the US or Australia, for example — within one generation they got the same rate.”

Prof Plant’s light bulb moment came when her husband, Peter, recalled that his Chinese colleagues would give him powdered milk because they did not drink it themselves.

I don't drink milk or eat yoghurt, although I do enjoy cheese & ice-cream, small amounts of butter so I'm not totally dairy-free.

How come Ms Plant only gets her views published in the UK tabloids (equiv to our Daily Telegraph)?

Dairy's fine as long as you don't overdo it and there's no intolerance to it's byproducts, such as lactose, and various preservatives, flavourings, sugar and other additives they put in the products.

I don't think eating and drinking more dairy necessarily equates to more calcium. The body can only store so much and passes what it can't store through the usual channels.

Freddie, was right.. this women is only in the news because she had a new book out which promotes her 'diet'.

She didn't even stick to her own dairy free diet in between cancer scares.

My sis in law (56 yo) tripped and broke (shattered) her elbow last year. The surgeon found she had osteoporosis and it took 6-7 hours of surgery to put it her elbow back together.

  • Dairy foods contain a high level of calcium which is easily absorbed – include 3 serves per day in your normal diet eg: glass of milk (250 ml), tub of yoghurt (200 g), slice of cheese (40 g) (Low fat options contain similar levels of calcium)
  • Try canned salmon or sardines which contain bones rich in calcium
  • Use yoghurt in soups or salads
  • Add milk or skim milk powder to soups or casseroles
  • Try soy based products and tofu that contain calcium
  • Include broccoli, mustard cabbage, bok choy, silverbeet, cucumber, celery, chick peas in your regular diet
  • Eat more almonds, dried figs and dried apricots
  • Products fortified with calcium (eg some breakfast cereals) can help improve your calcium intake

I would eat kilos of dried apricots but they are 1) too expensive & 2) a lot are imported, pretty poor quality, too much preservatives etc in them.

Here's another interesting link:

http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/food-nutrition/facts/is-milk-good-for-you.htm

For those who wish to keep dairy in their diet, know that much of the “regular” milk on store shelves is far from healthy.

Milk cows are given growth hormones to increase their milk production and antibiotics to decrease infections. These materials become contaminants in the milk and their impact on the human body is not entirely known.

Look for containers that clearly state that the cows used to produce the milk were not given any hormones or antibiotics. The term “organic”  can be misleading. Organic milk may mean no hormones in one case and no antibiotics in another, or that the cows were fed organic grain. Even large consumer companies such as Kroger and Starbucks are offering hormone-free dairy products.

You should also choose milk from grass-fed cows. While most cows will graze on grass at some point in their lifetime, many will be shifted to some other feed source to increase their size and milk production.

Cattle rely on an internal system that is uniquely adapted to the processing of grasses as their major food source. Other types of food, such as corn, will fatten up the cow and make them less healthy. T

his carries over to both the meat and the milk. Cows fed exclusively grass will themselves be healthier and produce healthier milk.

Strict food safety systems and requirements are in place to ensure the safety and integrity of Australian milk and other Australian dairy products.

- The use of growth promoting hormones is not permitted in Australian dairy production

 - In Australia, hormones such as oestrogen are not used in reproductive management in lactating cows

- BST or bovine somatotropin, a hormone used to increase milk production in some countries, is prohibited from use in Australia
