Going to fight against ISIS

Senior Australian Labor politician Matthew Gardiner travels to Syria 'to fight against Isis'

Young, and sometimes not so young, idealistic man have always gone fighting in someone else's wars.  Ausies voluteered in WW1, Britts & others went to fight in Spanish civil war.  Should it be a crime?  Even when Matthew Gardiner is fighting on the right side?

I guess the 'right side' depends on who you are talking to............or fighting against or for ?

It is all a matter of perspective - the 'wrong side' are pretty dertimined in their belief that they are the 'right side' after all.

Messy, ain't it ?

Sometimes the right side is the wrong side. The Irish Catholic Church supported the Irish Brigade which fought for Franco's fascists. The Vatican supported both Franco and Mussolini (The Lateran Treaty of 1929)
Even business supported the bad guys (as they do today e.g the Saudis)
The Texas Oil Co.*made a bundle supplying Franco with much needed fuel.
*Later to become Texaco and now known as Chevron-Texaco.

Yes, it is hard one.  Frankly I do not think we should be going to fight - full stop.  But person going to help the Kurds fighting against ISIS should not be treated the same as people fighting with ISIS.  But that is also problematic; remember that when the Syrian war started we were told that it is ISIS who are the freedom fighters trying to get rid off Bashar Hafez al-Assad.  It is a mess.  But I do not get it, why do we not just blockade the place, not allow food or weapons in, and not allow oil out.  How long would the boys last then if they had no food.  It is not fun doing wheelies in tank when you are starving.

The west is reluctant to blow the oil wells etc to smithereens because of the impact it would have on the Syrian populace:now and afterwards when (hopefully) this war ends.

I remember people (from this part of the world too)  going off to join the French Foreign legion when I was younger... what was that all about?

Beyond its reputation as an elite unit often engaged in serious fighting, the recruitment practices of the French Foreign Legion have also led to a somewhat romanticised view of it being a place for disgraced or "wronged" men looking to leave behind their old lives and start new ones.

Remember that view too.

No need to blow the wells up, just blockade the borders (of the ISIS occupied area) and do not let any tankers out, and do not let weapons in.
