Halal Choices..... are you concerned with the halal slaughter of animals such as beef, lamb and poultry.

To be halal certified the animal must be facing Mecca, have its throat cut while still alive and then ritually sacrificed by a Muslim who recites a prayer dedicating the slaughter to Allah.

Because the animals must be slaughtered alive, stun guns are often not an option as they can kill an animal before the heart pumps out all the blood.

Interesting youtube    https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mSP47FAtn6U

The presenter is Kirralie Smith, an average Aussie housewife, who does the weekly grocery shopping.

Ms Smith became aware, then alarmed, about the Islamic halal certification on so many of her shopping list items. She looked for a list of halal certified foods so she could make informed choices about what to buy and what to avoid.

There was no such list, yet so many supermarket products were stamped 'halal certified'.

Ms Smith started to do her own investigation, calling supermarket chains, grocery producers - even the halal certifiers - all so she could be better informed when she went to do her shopping.

She has personally contacted over 500 companies to determine their halal certification status.

What she discovered was bigger than big.

Kirralie Smith is the founder and director of HalalChoices. Kirralie holds a BA in Theology and lives with her family in coastal New South Wales. What started as an attempt to put together a shopping list for her family led to two years of research into halal certification schemes in Australia; as well as our most comprehensive resource concerning these tax-like schemes now imposed on the majority of our food products.

I wouldn't buy halal (or kosher killed)  meat for the same reason that I don't buy cage eggs, and only eat free range pork and chicken. but halal applies to ANY foodand simply means it can be eaten by Muslims without breaking their dietary rules. I suspect that the reason most halal food is not specifically labelled is because most Australian food is halal by default anyway.

WOW huge list ..... why do we need so many foods HALAL certified..

Why does fruit have to be HALAL certified?  and bread?  and so many other foods

Why do Hot Cross Buns need to be HALAL?

What is this costing us in hidden costs in a $ value in our food

It's a marketing ploy to con potential customers into thinking the product is better than an identicl one that doesn't have the label - just like advertising something as low GI or 97% fat free.

if you really want to get up in arms about something, ask about the over the top food safety standards for both Coles and Woolworths.

adds 100's of thousands of dollars to the operating cost of every company that supplies them.

cost of halal certification is tiny

There is debate within Islamic law on whether or not stunning the animal first violates this rule, but Jewish law is very clear on the matter. Stunning methods cause injury to the animal, making the meat that ultimately comes from it non-kosher.  Muslims can generally eat kosher food, but Jews cannot eat all halal food.   With exception of alcohol, which is not halal, but can be kosher.

Interestingly, I do not recall ever anybody being concerned about kosher meat and the slaughter practices.  And as far as the other food stuff goes, the little stamp it is not different to having ingredients, or warning about nuts on the label.  Besides the slaughtering rule, the halal requirements are really just basic food safety standards, which are high in this country already, and there is no additional testing needed.  That is why just about anything can be halal

More the fact that the food producer pays to use the halal label and the funds are used to fund terrorism.
