The press in Canberra last week and had the opportunity to ask Opposition Leader Tony Abbott whether a government under his direction would continue with the Rudd government's goal of halving homelessness by 2020.

His answer was no.

In justifying his stance, Abbott quoted from the Gospel of Matthew: ''The poor will always be with us,'' he said, and referred to the fact there is little a government can do for people who choose to be homeless.

While it is healthy for an opposition to challenge government policy and propose alternatives, Abbott's view was surprising and more than a little troubling.

Generally it is business people and the rich that support Liberals so thats a strange comment when you say the poor will vote for liberals.

Its has always been that the blue collar workers and the poor support Labor because they tend to support social policies.

As for Abbot there is not a lot of good to be said about the guy

For the poor end of town to vote for Liberals they would need to be clueless about what the parties stand for.

Liberals dont win anything in their own right, they dont have the voter support, they only have the numbers by getting support from minor parties like the National party, thats why its called a coalition.

If it was a straight vote between labor and liberals they would never be elected.

The problems with what we have is the parties are too focused on what is best for them and their supporters and not whats best for this country.

Liberals are only interested in the top end of town and dont care about workers or the poor and disadvantaged.

Labor only cares about the poor and thinks the rich should support everyone.

They have lost a lot of support in recent years as they have distanced themselves from the union movement and the the average worker

they are both short sighted and never look at the long term issues because they know they wont be around to answer the questions of prior bad decisions.

Having meet people who choose homelessness he is right, its a free country if someone wants to be homeless you can't force them not to be.  In saying that its a cop out statement and not at all in context with the scripture that quite clearly says if you see your brother in need and have possessions to help you should.

There are so many preventative things any government can do to help people see there is hope and they have value as individuals.  If mental health services were improved, services that target poverty were enhanced and emergency accommodation was made more available to those experiencing domestic violence and homelessness this wouldn't be such an issue.

I think that if we as a community were apart of the solution that there are so many lives we could impact for the better.
