Context is everything. When my husband moved to N.Z. as a child, the other kids teased him, calling him a pom. He is Scottish, and so the term was offensive to him. When he moved back to Scotland 3 years later, the kids called him a Kiwi, and the schoolyard fights ensued.
I'm not offended by being called a Yank(on this board). I just don't relate to the term in any way. I live on the West coast. I also come from European, Canadian, and American Indian roots. I am the first generation on my mothers side to live in the U.S. My fathers side is Amer. Indian, and who knows what else.
I feel that the term Yank, is a convenient term that other countries have adopted.
Amerie, doesn't sound as good as Ozzie, Pom, or Kiwi.
