LITTLE Johnny Howard has proved to be a giant among his contemporaries, voted the country's best prime minister of the past quarter century.
But there is little cheer for Julia Gillard this Australia Day after she rated last in a new poll
Mr Howard was considered by 35 per cent of just over 1000 people polled by Galaxy as Australia's best leader of a generation. Just 5 per cent felt the same about Ms Gillard.
Among Labor voters Ms Gillard's support (11 per cent) was almost identical to Mr Howard's (10 per cent).
Among all voters Ms Gillard was outshone by the man she deposed, with Kevin Rudd tying on 16 per cent with Bob Hawke.
Older voters have also been underwhelmed by Ms Gillard, with 3 per cent of respondents aged 50 to 64 rating her as the best prime minister compared to 6 per cent of those aged 18 to 34.
Paul Keating ranked fourth, with 9 per cent of people considering him the best prime minister of the past 25 years.
Mr Howard, Australia's second longest serving leader, said yesterday he was "flattered" by the result of the Galaxy poll.
"It was a huge privilege to have been prime minister of Australia for almost 12 years," he said.
Mr Rudd quipped he was "glad to have beaten Mr Howard once" at the 2008 election before lightheartedly adding: "I'm disappointed I didn't beat him again."
He said he was proud of the things he had achieved in his almost three years as PM.
"I am proud to have led a team that got Australia through the Global Financial Crisis without going into recession and without mass unemployment as we saw elsewhere in the world," he said.
"I am proud we got Australia a seat on the G20 and on the United Nations Security Council.
"And I am proud of the apology (to indigenous Australians), the National Broadband Network, paid parental leave, the education revolution and delivering the biggest pension rise in Australia's history."
Mr Hawke's office said he declined to comment on the poll result, which saw him ranked highest by Labor voters with 27 per cent ranking him as best prime minister ahead of Mr Rudd at 23 per cent.
Mr Keating was not available for comment yesterday while a spokesman for Ms Gillard declined to comment.

I really liked Mr Howard as PM. It made me feel secure with him at the helm.
Ditto

That is not much of a claim to fame, over 25 years only.
Mr Howard was considered by 35 per cent of just over 1000 people polled by Galaxy as Australia's best leader of a generation
That is a tiny poll sample of people. What do the other millions of Australian's think?
Galaxy Research:
Its polls are published in News Limited tabloid newspapers, including the Herald Sun, Courier-Mail and The Daily Telegraph, in contrast to Newspoll data which are presented in the News Limited broadsheet newspaper The Australian.
actualy in terms of polls a thuosand people is about the average sizewhen doing surveys

In 2007, when Little Johnny was telling us "we'd never been better off" in his "once in a generation labour market".......The region I live in had the highest unemployment in the Nation - imagine that.
Now we have Juliar Dullard and not much has changed actually. Red, Blue, Green, All BS !!!
The nation (at least those who saw Q & A), seem to want Rudd & Turnbull to slug it out but both major parties don't want what Australian voters want.
I wouldn't vote for Stony Blabbott in a pink fit but Juliar Dullar doesn't turn me on either.
If only they'd dump both & put Rudd & Turnbull head to head...now that would be interesting politics.

KIH: "That is a tiny poll sample of people. What do the other millions of Australian's think?"
Gallop:- "People generally believe the results of polls, but they do not believe in the scientific principles on which polls are based"
"The typical sample size for a Gallup poll which is designed to represent the general population is 1,000 national adults."
DY: "It's amazing given he was the most wasteful spender:"
"Perhaps the nero is living under a rock?"
Let's see, Howard came to power in 1996, and departed Nov. 2007. Obviously all that wasteful spending promptly ended then !. Or did it?
I would guess that there is room for two under NW's rock!

Meanwhile, while he concentrated on a surplus, our National Infrastructure crumbled. BTW...Hi Monman

You have attributed that statement to the wrong ID.
