A QUEENSLAND mayor says locals are shocked by the size of a weapons haul found on an isolated farm.
Queensland police are working with their federal counterparts after uncovering a cache of 328 guns and more than four tonnes of ammunition near Monto, in the North Burnett region, on Monday.
The weapons included military-style automatic and semi-automatic rifles, hand guns and even a sub-machine gun.
While some of the guns were registered, a significant number were illegal or had been modified.
Authorities have described the find as alarming and are trying to determine where the weapons came from, and if there's any link to criminal gangs.
"There are not a lot of properties or buildings around close by. Nobody up there was aware of what was happening," he told AAP on Friday.
"I understand from talking to people that there were never any problems from the people concerned, and that it was more or less a hobby they had collecting firearms.
"But clearly it got out of hand."
He said the incident was isolated and the North Burnett remained a very safe place to live.

Heard a few years back of some people buying weapons and ammo from someone at a military base/ammunition handling area, not sure if true. Styer Aug's.
Handguns are making their way via china inside shipping containers (disasembled) and parts found stuffed inside cylinder heads of car motors shipped into OZ so they cannot be found during random scans.
