As I said in a previous post, we tell ourselves to hate them - and our Government encourages us to tell ourselves this. I

To HATE them?   Who tells themselves that?  Where has the govt said that?

Me...... and I'm sure many many feel the same,  my heart just breaks for them.

Hate is perhaps too strong a word, and in saying 'we' I was referring to society generally, not you or me or anyone else individually. But you only have to read comments posted all over social media and Government statements along the lines of We will decide who comes to this country." to know that many people  tell (and are encouraged to tell) themselves that these people are illegals who are tryng to take advantage of us, who secretly despise us  and will destroy our culture and our economy if given half a chance.

I don't understand how people can put that spin on it but I agree some do.    In the case of the Syrian refugees let them watch footage of the families carrying children and maybe only one little bag of possessions walking out of Hungary to .....   anywhere ........as they are so afraid and desperate.  Let these protestors  walk in another's shoes .........  I know how I'd feel suddenly uprooted from my home  and familiarity being forced  to escape and having no idea what would become of me.

And now the Prime Minister has all but conceded the fact that her own Government’s policies were enticing asylum seekers to cough up thousands of dollars for places on leaky boats. Earlier this month in Parliament, Julia Gillard promised that her new ‘Malaysian-solution’ would send an unequivocal message to those seeking to try their luck:

“If you risk your life and spend your money on getting on a boat trying to come to Australia, you risk being taken to Malaysia and being put to the back of the queue.”

Parliamentary secretary Ed Husic today confirmed a review of the Refugee Convention was being considered and said there was a need to bring its provisions into line with refugee movements of today.

"Where there are situations where people are fleeing persecution and the immediate threat of violence, then certainly the convention does operate in the right way,'' Mr Husic told Sky News.

"What it doesn't deal with is someone hopping on a plane from (the Iranian capital) Tehran, going to Indonesia ... and then hopping on a vessel to come across and do the two day trip (to Australia) and classing themselves as a refugee.''
