I know this is a long shot but...... doggy question

My Charlotte  cavalier (avi) has had her second episode in 6 months of

canine haemorrhagic gastroenteritis -  2nd day  in hospital on drips and meds

and still not stable  -

I've done a lot of research on the internet, reputable sites, and long talks with the

vet and they

just don't know what causes it despite numerous tests so I don't have

much to go on.

I won't go into the symptoms way too upsetting and horrendous, ,

but just wondering if anyone  here has had experience of this and

any suggestions or ideas ?

I've only had my little girl for a few months and love her dearly and

will do anything.  Please help if you can?.

Check for Parvovirus

Sounds like this is what she has... it is a deadly virus, but one of my dogs did survive it at about the same age as your little girl...

Could be the vet hasn't heard of it...

Good luck... 🙂

Check for Parvovirus

The vet would have hopefully done that already.  There are tests to differentiate the two.

How is Charlotte doing?  :-x

Although I have had dogs for many years I have no answers but this is in the SMH today.  A very interesting read for pet owners.  I didn't know about some of the items that can cause problems.

Oh thanks everyone for your warm wishes, and advice. :-x

No it's not parvo.

No a bone didn't cause it.

It's not ibs.

No cattle.

No poisons, plants or otherwise

I've had her for 10 months now and she's a very happy lively

little girl,  no signs of stress.

What kopenhagen said is all they seem to know.

Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis is a mystery disease. No one knows what causes it and there is no recommended prevention. It does not seem to be contagious from one dog to another.

And there's no warning either it happens out of the blue, so quicly. and unless they're rushed to emergency they won't survive.

It makes me fell so helpless not knowing what to do for her when she comes home.  She's still in hospital on a drip (has lost huge amount of blood) but picking up they say thank

goodness.  She only had this 6 months ago but I was able to take her home the same

day, this one is much worse.  Sorry to carry on but I feel a bit sick to the stomach as I got her last year shortly after my old cat,  then dog, passed away( after months of nursing and stress )  and she bought me new joy, I just don't feel able to cope with this again so soon.

Anyway i will be positive and hopefully she'll be home soon and hopefully will be my little happy angel again.

Thanks again for your support.

She is picking up, that is great news.  I read up a bit more about this

and with rapid treatment, she should recover within a few days.  I'm sure

she'll be fine and home with you soon :-x:-x

I also have a cavalier, they are such beautiful dogs.

Bright - I hope your little doggie feels better soon.

I don't have dogs but I have a Persian cat who has had problems with blood in his poop and projectile vomiting all his life. It's a shock when you see large amounts of blood.

My cat, Thai, has what the vet diagnosed as some kind of IBS/Allergy. He wanted to medicate Thai with cortisone but said that has it's own problems and reduces life expectancy. I chose to use diet to help Thai. I tried many diets and different brands of food. I have found he does fine on Royal Canin Oral. Any other brand or even flavour in the RC range causes blood in his poop and diarrhea. Fish makes him vomit. Cooked meat makes him lethargic and I suspect gives him tummy aches.

I dread to think what I'd feed him if they discontinued RC Oral.  It's not perfect, he tends to have very dry skin so he needs omega 3 & 6 but can't digest fish. Still working on that one.

Perhaps experimenting with diet may help?
