My Charlotte cavalier (avi) has had her second episode in 6 months of
canine haemorrhagic gastroenteritis - 2nd day in hospital on drips and meds
and still not stable -
I've done a lot of research on the internet, reputable sites, and long talks with the
vet and they
just don't know what causes it despite numerous tests so I don't have
much to go on.
I won't go into the symptoms way too upsetting and horrendous, ,
but just wondering if anyone here has had experience of this and
any suggestions or ideas ?
I've only had my little girl for a few months and love her dearly and
will do anything. Please help if you can?.

Hello bright.ton, 🙂
I don't have answers for you, I wish I did, but I hope your little pup gets well very soon!
I suppose the vet has asked you all the questions re. Feeding etc...... If there is something in the garden she shouldn't eat, does she associate with other dogs?.....are there rodents or rabbits around?..... Would she eat things like that?...... Just a few things that come to my mind!.... Has the vet suggested a different diet?.... Does he think it is an infection or a reaction to something?

A dog of mine had one episode and he was like it when collected from a kennel after 2 weeks.
When I went to pick him up to put him in the car he yelped terribly and tired to bite me and the woman said "he is a really snappy dog and we haven't been able to touch him for 4 days"!!!!!!!!!
When I got home I took him into the back yard and, well it all poured out and I was hysterical and my mother was phoning the vet (it was New Years Day) and the vet said they would see him at the surgery in less than 1 hour.
He was immediately put on a drip and antibiotics and made a speedy recovery and never had the problem again but he was the last animal anyone in my extended family have ever put in a kennel. He did have xrays and they were ok.
What caused it?
Could have been a bit of bone in his food scratched his bowel, an infection from another dog or just bad luck.
It was lucky he didn't die through lack of treatment.
i only ever fed him soft food after that because he would eat so quickly and I didn't ever want him to go through that again.

I think its an ibs thing so you might need to experiment with dog food.

So sorry to hear your little girl is unwell, Bright, it must be a very worrying time for you.
Now this probably bears absolutely no relation, but just before xmas I was incredibly ill with similar symptoms. Apparently I had picked up a bug from our new poddy calves. (Same bug that causes scours in young calves).
Has she had any contact with cattle, at all?
Just thought I might mention it, as sometimes things that are appear to be completely unrelated can be the cause.
I did a quick google and they say they think stress may play a role - she's fairly new to your home, from memory? Is there anything that may be upsetting her as she settles in?
Hope she gets better quickly.
Our menagerie donned hospital masks to send slobbery kisses to Charlotte.

could it be a toxic plant that was ingested ??

Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis is a mystery disease. No one knows what causes it and there is no recommended prevention. It does not seem to be contagious from one dog to another.

You may have seen this one, I found this good reading on the subject.
BTW, CKC spaniels are my favorite. 🙂
