I miss the corner shop...

Remember those?

Not the local minimart or IGA but the actualy shop on the corner.

Where you could buy everything you were bound to run out of, where the locals picked uyp all the gossip, where the owner lived out the back and knew your name, where the hours were vague but you knew they would still be open at 8pm at night, where you had to double count your change when the owners kid (now a lawyer) was serving behind the counter...

I've got a hankering for a Vienna loaf but to get one I have to put my shoes back on, get into my car, drive to the nearest supermarket, wrestle a car spot, wind my way through aisles and get served by a 15 year old who doesn't even look at me...

Anyone still got one at the end of the street or around the block?

Yeah I do too but I guess they just couldn't survive me going to the supermarket for my basic household needs.

Unless the deli sells newspapers, toilet rolls, birthday cards, mixed lollies, toothpaste, fruit and veg, cigarettes, lifesavers, bic pens and crunchy bars, then it isn't in the same league.

But I'm envious that you can walk to your deli...

there are still a few in this area, and the prices give a clue as to why they died out.

yes they seem to have become more like a deli and less like a service station, a place to get your car serviced and repaired
