How do I find out...OR... who should i ask in regards to seeking some info about the history of a pub in Melbourne?
(I am in NSW)
I want to know the name of the pub who was first allowed to legally trade after 12MN. I dont have any dates/or the year and i dont know the trading name of the pub.
...and I dont even know where to start looking.
Cheers ... and... thanx folks 🙂

I've been there Deb. I lived in Melbourne for a few years and when my dad came over for a visit he wanted to see her.

I'm wondering if the 1st pub to get a late trading license was Young & Jacksons? Home of the famous Chloe painting.
& as Punch has already mentioned, it was a 6 o'clock close for most Melbourne pubs up until about the sixties I think
This is interesting... I havent heard of that famous painting, i will have to check it out since Chloe is my eldest daughters name :-x
I have found plenty of info on the 6 O'Clock Swill, and the increase to 10pm trading, but nothing that mentions 12MN trading yet.
I havent had a chance to ring anybody yet, either...
Will get cracking on it over the Easter Break. I just love buying *old* stuff... you should see the piano accordian we purchased last month circa 1800. OH its gorgeous. I love it too. 🙂
Thanx folks... have a gr8 weekend. 🙂

Not sure about pubs opening after midnight.
The Waterside Hotel had a licence to open at 6am many years ago.
This was to cater for the wharfies finishing night shift.
May still happen-dont know.......................................Richo.

Thanks for that link _Punch. I can remember my dad coming home every night around 6.30 with 2 bottles of beer. When they changed the hours sometimes we kids had to go and drag him home after 7 because we couldn't have tea till he got home lol.

"victorian licensing act;
the licensing act, which was passed last session, came into operation today. the cardinal alteration by the (measure)? was a provision for local option. and an immediate change is the alteration of the hour of closing from the hour of 12pm to 11.30pm some difficulty is likely to arise owing to the fact that no arrangements have been made for constituting licensing courts under the act. the ommission has given rise to considerable adverse comment."

Eloi, my post is gone but I haven't seen any notice about it so I'm guessing they can't make up their minds whether it was reported by the ladies branch of the 'Anglican Social Purity' or just another bloomin' trapper 😛
Anyway, it's an interesting story and a beautiful painting. Just google Chloe Young and Jacksons and look at the pdf one too.

If I posted a pic of the statue of David, would it be reported and removed?
