I was treated like a criminal at BP

I went to BP about 30mins ago to fill my tank. I grabbed the pump to fill up and a voice came over the loud speaker saying "PREPAID ONLY".  They refused to allow me to fill up so had to go inside to prepay an amount of $80 without knowing how much I needed whether it was higher or lower. It turned out the pump stopped at $80 as the operator pre-programmed that exact amount. I have been buying fuel at this particular place for 12 years. They wont see me again!

A big chain store (electronics, furniture, white goods) near where I live had a photo board of security camera photos of people caught in the act of shoplifting (still photo clearly showing them slipping a DVD or something inside their jacket, their face was identifiable). It was a big board on a stand just as you entered the store. They were made to take it down. Not sure if they did that voluntarily or were forced to by law.

Am one of our local stores had a board that showed shoplifters doing what they do, they were forced to take it down because until the offender has been to they are presumed innocent."

yeah, even though i dont indulge in flogging fuel and dont condone that sort of behaviour, i looked like discrimination to me so i questioned it, the attendant said; it must be legal for the management to do coz it's been up there for a long time (the screen is higher up on the wall, was the first time i noticed it) it might have something to do with being on video not displayed as snap shots

if you were the only customer they required to pay upfront then yes, it woud be reasonabe to say they are assuming you are a theif.

are you the only customer they have this policy for or are you being treated the same way every other customer there is treated?

this realy is not a case of discrimmination, nor is it a catastrophe!

my fav servo placed signs on one line of bowsers about a year ago....the ones that are positioned for the fastest 'get away' etc.....anyhoo, the signs request that you pre-pay before starting the bowser, after 3pm. I asked why and was told they have too many non-payers. I would not have the guts to drive in, fill up and take off without paying.

.....I get into enough trouble every day as it is without adding stealing fuel to my agenda LOL!

there's one pump there on the end (which is a good proposition for the theives, quick drive through to the road)

& not so easily seen by the staff too (no idea of security camera set-up) has a little sign in place too - prepaid only 24/7

it's not worth the trouble of getting caught for something like that hey, i suppose if you can afford your own transport, you can pay for the fuel to run it 🙂

Where is it Jo, I'd like to check it out some time, PM me if you want.
There's a servo in Canning Vale, has pictures of petrol thieves and their vehicles on the wall. Trouble is, most of them have the license plate removed.

http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/fuel-shutdown-as-wa-stations-fight-petrol-theft-20140522-zrjtm.htm...
With confusion over jurisdiction for the crime – considered a breach of contract, not theft, in WA – offenders are going unpunished, prompting service station owners to take matters into their own hands by locking down bowsers and only selling petrol to people who have paid prior.

The last time I was asked to prepay, I offered to leave my car keys at the counter while I filled instead, the attendant agreed and apologised later for the prepay thing, then pointed at the board with all the pictures on it. I don't know if this station is prepay all the time or if the bowser I was at didn't have a camera on it.

This thread reminds me of the 'bag check' on exit from stores thread. Where a minority of posters felt like they were bring treated like thieves if asked to show their bags on exit and objected and the majority accepted it as a store security measure and where happly to comply if asked.

Lets face it, there are people out there thieving everyday - shoplifting, stealing petrol, stealing stuff from building sites, breaking into cars and stealing stuff out of them, etc. The retailers are taking measures to counteract this.. Lowering losses through theft, means less increase in prices to compensate.

The baddies ruin it for it for us goodies, thats how it rolls.

Is it necessary to buy petrol regularly in the early hours of the morning, unless the driver is a shift worker?

I was invited to a party last night and needed fuel on the way home. Now that I know this servo is a prepay I wont shop there. Simple! As a matter of principle I will not support any store where innocent people are assumed guilty without evidence of any guilt.

My number plates were clearly displayed - the vehicle was washed yesterday.  The CCTV footage would be so clear that local police and crimestoppers would have had a field day if I drove off.

Well the servo I've been going to for years know me, even the new console operators are clued up on who are regulars. So if your servo is a carppy one then perhaps but mine make a point of knowing the regulars.
