Indian Mining Giant Approved Mining In NSW water catchment Area

Before the last state election, then NSW opposition leader Barry O’Farrell made a promise to ban CSG development in our water catchments.

He said:“The next Liberal/National Government will ensure that mining cannot occur … in any water catchment area, and will ensure that mining leases and mining exploration permits reflect that common sense; no ifs, no buts, a guarantee.” -

Well we all know what happened to Mr O'Farrell.  Resigned for not declaring a $3000 bottle of wine presented to him by Australain Water Holdings  executive Nick Girolamo.
Australia Water Holdings which is linked to disgraced former Labor MP Eddie Obeid.
Eddie Obeid who issued corrupt mining licences which were torn up by Barry O'Farrell.
O'Farrell who felt himself forced to resign for not declaring the gift of a bottle of wine...you get the drift.

Mr O'Farrell's resignation made way for Mike Baird who is basing his election campaign for NSW's upcoming election on privatising the state's electricity network.

Mike Baird must resist coal industry pressure and restore balance - Lock the Gate Alliance

“In the last few months, Mike Baird has parroted the Minerals Councils’ agenda in promising faster mining approvals and harsher penalties for landholders that dare to stand up to the mining industry. It’s no wonder he’s being greeted with protest wherever he goes.

“Rather than punishing the people of the bush for standing up for their livelihoods, the Premier should ask himself why these protests are happening: it’s because his Government has failed to protect the people and landscapes of New South Wales from the mining industry. Communities are trying desperately to let him know that it has gone too far.

This week has seen the Walk for Water march organised by the Greens against the 6th longwall mine proposed by Wollongong Coal,  Indian Mining Co Gujarat NRE under another name , which was approved last December.

This right in the middle of a water catchment area.

"NSW government backing for a huge underground expansion of Wollongong Coal’s Russell Vale mine is ‘‘irresponsible’’ and puts the interests of big business ahead of the community, a conservation group says.

In recommending approval be given for the troubled Illawarra company to extend the life of its mine by five years, the state’s planning department acknowledged a number of environmental risks.

The planned underground expansion would allow longwall mining under a large portion of protected water catchment area, including much of the reservoir behind Cataract Dam, which supplies drinking water to Wollongong and Sydney."

Illawarra Residents for Responsible Mining spokeswoman Kaye Osborn said the PAC's decision was deeply concerning.

"The proposal will result in about 1.8 metres of subsidence in the Sydney Water Catchment Special Areas and will result in the loss of half a million litres of water per day," Ms Osborn said.

She said these figures came from the Department of Planning and Environment's report to the PAC and it was disturbing the department supported the proposal.

"I think the Department of Planning is out of touch with community sentiment on the value of water. Greater Sydney is the only city in the world that allows mining in its public water catchment."

Mr Baird has dishonoured the promise he inherited from Barry O'Farrell. It seems the lure of easy cash from the mining giants ijust too hard to resist and to hell with the wishes of the people.

He should take note of what happened to the Liberal government of Campbell Newman in QLD.

Luke Foley, Labor's contender, is starting to look like a mighty fine Premier. For starters, he's promised a range of infrastructure projects indepent of the sales or "poles and wires".

If I remember rightly, there's not a great deal of distance between the Russell Vale mine and the residents houses.I wouldn't want to hang my washing out, there. Or breathe.

If Luke Foley's going to sell the poles,he'll make a fortune at Russell Vale. Those sweeping bends used to have a power pole about every 20 feet.If you mounted the kerb there, you were a goner.

It's Mike Baird wants to sell poles and wires. He wants to sell everything.

Luke Foley reckons he doesn't have to and can still finance infrastructure.
