As far as smileys go I find it just as easy to use my own. When others are using them I can't tell what the expression is.
Just click the green tree when posting and it'll take you to your own.
I even picked up one for Monman...

I think sarcasm is often used to be cruel, to put down an individual. I don't think that's desirable.
If it's used in a non-personal way, for example, about politics, or world affairs, then it can be useful and non-hurtful.
