LAST week the man likely to be federal treasurer come September fired off, in part, the following Tweet about Prime Minister Julia Gillard: "She has never deserved respect and will never receive it."

Unlike the personal vilification and denigration of our Prime Minister, however, it is the stuff that tends to stay where it belongs in the nether regions of the blogosphere.

Which is what makes Julia Gillard and the big smear all the more depressing and extraordinary - so much so that it is now making international headlines like this one over the weekend: "Treatment of Julia Gillard shows extent to which sexism is tolerated in Australia".

The sub-head in The Irish Times newspaper reads: "Prime Minister is attacked relentlessly in contemptible, offensive terms".

"It is almost impossible to picture all of the above (abuse) happening in most other modern countries," the newspaper says. "Can you imagine the outcry if, for instance, a political rival had stood in front of signs calling (former Irish politician) Mary Harney a (edited:rhymes with witch)   or if a menu had referred to her genitalia?"

If the target of the attacks calls it for what it is then she is "playing the gender card".

Dont worry and stress less and please STOP SHOUTING in large font or are you trying to RAM down all our throats your personal opinion.

Now like I said stress less as on September 14 at about 6.30pm  (or sooner) it will all be over for her and you wont have to worry any more or get so worked up and so stressed. 

All you will have to do is post about how bad Tony is as he will be our next PM.

I pulled this comment from the story and it reflects how the majority of Australia feel about this govt and Julia and its how the majority of women feel... Its how I feel as well.

Respect is earned, it is not conferred as a right of office. As a woman, I have no respect for Julia Gillard. I have no respect for anyone who lies to me.

That has nothing to do with her gender.

I am disgusted that she continually plays the gender card in order to deflect legitimate critisism of herself and her dysfunctional government and their policy failures.

Anyone in her position, male or female, who had presided over such policies, and such a dysfunctional government would lack respect in the broader community.

Its not about her gender, its about a lack of competence, its about deceit.

Saying one thing and doing another is not likely to win admiration or respect in any professional sphere.

Her "poor me, everyone picks on me cuz I'm a girl" schtick is old.

If she wants repect, perhaps its time to earn it.

Grow up, take responsibility for the policy failures, try to look a little more like a Prime Mininster, and a little less like a spoiled child crying foul because she has been caught out doing the wrong thing.

Children growing up in Australia in 2013 are watching the news and observing how Julia Gillard is being treated. They are learning about what is respectful, acceptable behaviour and what can reasonably be considered a joke. As adults, we are modeling for them values about gender and sexuality.
