In my opinion it's our business if we want to turn boats around. They are Indonesian boats, crewed by Indonesians, participating in people smuggling.

We have the right to protect our borders & nobody can tell us what to do re safeguarding our country.

Indonesia know this.

Did anyone read what France is doing to their immigrants???

They are cutting welfare by about 80% to immigratns so if you want to go there you will now have to go out and get a job.. apparently they have a huge problem with some cultures coming to stay and then not working... they now have a huge problem with the second generation doing the same thing.. living on wlefare and not working.

a bit like our problem with 95% of some cultures still on welfare five years after arrival.

Sigh.

No catmad.

Please check your facts before publishing rubbish like this. France is doing no such thing.

This ridiculous story comes about from one article (repeated word for word adnauseum) by a writer who has taken exerpts out of context from Valls book on Socialism (he is a very right winged socialist btw) and stitched it up with Sarkozy's intergration policy to create a big fat lie.

The story started doing the rounds in early 2012 and hasn't changed much in nearly 18 months.

You miss LLs point poddster.

Indonesia has many hundreds of thousands of people sitting in refugee camp. Some of those people are their own from the various natural disasters and many are moved there through various UN camps and global treaties.

They have a major problem managing and processing these people let alone feeding them and keeping them safe.

So do you really think they are going to be bothered with a relative handful of people escaping by boat? I am sure these people are way down on the list of their problems that need to be solved.

Agree with martini's reply.

CM:

If you would like others to take your posts seriously, you could give more details of where you got this information from.

If you are going to quote %'s then there must be some official statistics that available where these statistics originated.

What cultures are you specifically referring to anyway?

The numbers were on a government website...

They are facts.

Nope. Went through the document and nothing mentioned  95% of some cultures still on welfare five years after arrival.

In fact the only comments on unemployment were along these lines:

While Humanitarian entrants are less likely to be working compared with other streams, they are
far more likely to be studying full-time, studying and working or studying and looking after their
families. Given that we are exploring only the first five years of settlement in this study, this is
not a surprising result as many Humanitarian entrants are strongly focused on creating a new life,
and studying for a qualification is an important step in this journey. As outlined in chart 11
earlier, after 4 years living in Australia, around 40% of Humanitarian entrants have a job of some
type.

So not 95%. We are talking about 60% 4 years after resettlement but they are also likely to be studying in order to get a qualification in order to get a job. I have underlined the critical section for you.

Agree with martini. There is no 95% figure that relates to some cultures still being on welfare 5 years after arrival.

I did read this though on page 20:

Length of time in Australia analysis indicates that the proportion of Humanitarian entrants’ households in receipt of Centrelink payments decreases slowly over five years.

It must be understood that Centrelink payments are not only unemployment benefits but also include Youth Allowance, Austudy and child care rebates.

When the same analysis was conducted on employment, employment steadily increases over time, particularly after the first two years in Australia.

They [France] now have a huge problem with the second generation doing the same thing.. living on wlefare and not working.

.... my daughter volunteers for a program helping refugee children with their school homework and English. They are very polite, work hard and are eager to learn.(some already know 3 or so languages from all the different countries they have been shuffled around in before living in Australia). They just as likely as any other Australian to do well at school, get good qualifications and get a job.

I posted the massive problems France', Spain & the UK have months ago but it's all conveniently forgotten on here, just so long as they can bag out Bishop they're happy. We have the exact same problem in Victoria. Whole suburbs who have never worked a day in 5 years, since they came here.
