"But the relatively sudden removal of 1760 MW of baseload power capacity in Victoria without replacement has caused consternation in the industry, not just among large consumers but also other power producers, concerned on the market impact.

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has called out Victorian premier Daniel Andrews over the closure of the Hazelwood power plant.
The Hazelwood coal-fired power plant is due to shut in regional Victorian this week, with electricity prices and reliability issues again expected to dominate question time in parliament. Speaking with Sky News, Mr Joyce warned Victorian's they should expect blackouts if the plant is shut.
'I'd be really, really worried if I was a Victorian about Hazelwood because if you shut down that power plant 25 per cent of your power, you think you can just switch it off and your life goes on merrily,' he said. - See more at: http://www.skynews.com.au/news/politics/state/2017/03/26/joyce-warns-against-hazelwood-closure.html#...
The Nationals leader criticised the state's premier for not ensuring reliable power for residents in Victoria.
'These power stations are owned by the state government so this state government has sat back on its hands come up with some crazy idea that they are going to have renewable energy,' he said.
'I'll tell you what you are going to have, Blackouts. You're going to have people living in Victoria feeling like they are living in South Australia.
'Mr Joyce also dismissed the suggestion by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott for the government to intervene, saying it's the states issue and it's up to Daniel Andrews to fix. - See more at: http://www.skynews.com.au/news/politics/state/2017/03/26/joyce-warns-against-hazelwood-closure.html#...

Point being, Hazelwood was at the end of it's use by date. Closure was inevitable. But Government should have ensured there was enough back-up power before taking the step of closing the station altogether.
"But the relatively sudden removal of 1760 MW of baseload power capacity in Victoria without replacement has caused consternation in the industry, not just among large consumers but also other power producers, concerned on the market impact.
Energy entrepreneur Trevor St Baker describes the shutdown as "a disastrous act of national self-harm", and has told the Finkel Review on energy security that the closure had doubled forward contract base-load wholesale prices in Victoria in six months, equivalent to an extra $1.8 billion a year cost burden to Victorian electricity consumers."
