A NEW Zealand man has serious head injuries - after crashing a home-made motorised bar stool on the way home from a hotel.
The 62-year-old man had just left the Puhoi Hotel, 50km north of Auckland, on the makeshift vehicle - a go-kart with a barstool on top - when the accident happened on Friday afternoon.
Police say he wasn't wearing a helmet and was driving the contraption on the road when he fell, suffering serious head injuries.
No other vehicles were involved, police say.
``Whether alcohol was involved will be part of our investigation,'' Inspector Mark Fergus said.
``The vehicle was not road legal and we've seized it so it can be mechanically examined.
``An investigation is also underway into who actually owns the mechanical bar stool.''
The man has been airlifted to Auckland Hospital in a serious condition.
