Living with the Enemy on SBS

I just watched LIVING WITH THE ENEMY on SBS.  The story about Ben the Aussie going to live with Lidia and Ahmed the muslims. Lidia is an Aussie and was raised Catholic and converted to Islam. Ahmed was born in Saudi Arabia.

What did I learn?

- Muslim women wont shake hands with a male person their not related to. (Very rude).

- When husband and wife muslims pray in their own house, the wife has to pray behind her husband. (Women are not treated as equals even in their own house).

- Christians are not allowed to visit Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Why? Because you have to be muslim to be allowed.

- Mosques can be built all over Australia but we can't build a Church in Saudi Arabia.

- The Quran tells muslims to kill people.

- In the mosque women are behind the curtain at the back. It's their own area. Why? Because the men have to be in a different section. Why? To give women privacy. This is the reason they cited. The real reason I believe is not to cause desire in the men.

- When they went shopping they visited a halal butcher to buy lamb shoulder. Ben wasn't consulted. What if he wanted pork chops?

- They went to Bondi to do an "Aussie thing called surfing". Lidia went swimming in her full Islamic clothing then when she came out of the water she placed a towel around her depicting the Australian flag.

Australians love to socialise and a BBQ is usually how it's done.

VB, XXXX, Fosters Light are beers usually enjoyed with a pork chop, a snag, shrimp and bacon cooked to perfection on the BBQ.

How can you invite Muslims to eat pork and drink alcohol with Australians?  Alcoholic beverages and pork is strictly prohibited by Islam. It is seen as infidel food/drink and haram.

There are many people who do not drink alcohol, for what ever reason; some just because they drive.  As far as pork chops or sausage goes; well I do not eat pork either; purely for the reason how pigs are raised, but never had a problem going to BBQs.  Actually, I do not recall people serving pork at BBQ.   I also invite my vegetarian friends and make sure there is something  they can eat.

I would imagine if you invite muslims to your barbie they would do as I do, eat whatever suits them and leave the rest. I eat vitually no meat, no pork, chicken or seafood. Some how I have managed to survive and still enjoy barbies.

I am quite used to preparing food for various dietary needs, vegetarian, sugar free, gluten free, additive free,  red meat free, never a problem for a meal at my house.

That's what happens when you have 5 children who are all very different.

just like i can't buy horse meat here.

dear ufo,

people on cs are too thick and ignorant to understand. it will take another 20 years and people women being harassed in their own street by groups of young muslim males to understand. i admit, i would probably be like them if i hadn't experienced it myself.

it will take a hundred "honour" killings (not happened yet but it will, like it is nothing special anymore in countries with a higher muslim population than australia) to wake up the people to reality.

it's useless trying to tell them they will have to experience it themselves. it's sad but that's the way it goes.

While others on CS are obviously too bigoted and arrogant to understand that the old books of the bible are also rather barbaric by today's standards.

In 20 years time there will be more moderate muslims around. Just as the Christians evolved so will the Muslims.  It's only the extremists who live in the past forever.

I probably was not very clear. I will shake hands if a hand is offered. Do not extend my hand first.

I hadn't had a hand offerred to me for a hand shake in years until we met with the conveyancer recently. I can honestly say I felt uncomfortable, I would much prefer to say "pleased to meet you" or whatever, without the personal contact.

They are also not kosher, so I imagine you do not invite any Jews to your place.

That's hilarious - lots of people don't drink alcohol or eat pork or seafood , what do you suggest we do with these people - not all aussies like BBQs either - maybe they need re-education in how to live in the narrow little world of bikinis, beer, BBQ, pig and fish...Woman LOL

I don't feel particularly comfortable with the hand shake either BUT I would NEVER refuse a hand stretched out in friendship.

To those who say why would you want to visit Mecca? Have you never visited another country? Have you never been to a Cathedrial ? Temple? Ruins?

Now I consider myself an Australian. Wasn’t born here but been here long enough to pick up few things which I thought made us who we think we are; thing like backing up a mate, giving someone a fair go, doing my fair share, that sort of thing. And though I am an ex kraut, and therefore partial to a bit of pork, and though I’ve held or attended more than my fair share of barbies, I can’t remember one where the absence of pork was an issue..

So here the bit I think is important. If I invite someone over, the last thing I would want to do is make them feel uncomfortable. So if they have a specific preference when it comes to cuisine, I try to cater for them. Hell I recently held a barbie where a couple of vegetarians attended and they didn’t go hungry, which is exactly what I expect when I go to their place. As for drinks beer for me, a good red for the missus and a selection of cold softies (and water) for those who don’t drink.

My point it not what you eat or drink that matters. It’s the quality of company..
