Marijuana Cloud Hangs Over Town

A huge plume of marijuana smoke is hovering over an Albanian town after a police crackdown on its notorious drug trade.

Heavily armed police were pelted with gunfire, grenades and even mortars as they tried to rid the town of Lazarat, Europe's biggest producer of marijuana, of its main crop, the Associated Press reports.

The hills of the village in the country's south yields around 900 tons of cannabis a year, worth close to $6.5 billion – or nearly half the small country's GDP.

The operation in the village, population 5000, is in its fifth day has seen the destruction of 80,000 plants and more than 12.8 tons of cannabis while 80 houses have been searched.

Residents have reportedly seen the events unfold on live television, burning their own crops as authorities close in.

"What did I do wrong? I just wanted five plants like everybody else," Lumturi Koli, a 42-year-old widower, told Reuters.

"I should have been first to plant them because I have to care for my children."

While thirteen people have been arrested for drug offences and firing on police, miraculously no-one has been killed despite long blasts of gunfire.

Four have been slightly wounded, including two shepherds who were hit by stray rounds.

The raids have been part of an overhaul push by Albania and its new Socialist government to gain entry into the European Union.

People living in small towns have guns, grenades and mortars? So they really are protecting their plantations!

Sheesh, what happened to using land for growing food crops and keeping goats and chickens?

Similar tragedies have occurred (in Australia) because of alcohol and legally prescribed drugs.

In Australia.....

RESULTS:

Over 7 years, there was a total of 14,662 hospital admissions for paracetamol overdose with a mean of 2095 cases per year.

Accidental overdoses comprised 15% (n = 2149) of cases. The overdose rate fell from 46 cases per 100,000 in 2001 to 39 cases per

100,000 in 2006 (P < 0.001). Most overdoses occurred in women (71%), and patients between 15 and 50 years old comprised 78% of

all cases. Complications and mortality were relatively uncommon, with only 26 deaths directly attributable to paracetamol overdose

over the 7 years. No child under 15 years old died from their overdose.

There was no saving money on grocery money. On the contrary, he'd get the munchies and eat everything in sight. If there was nothing in sight he'd cook himself something and cause more problems through "inattention".

Lost his job because of consant mistakes and accidents through "inattention".

Previously an excellent home handyman sat around the house all day with the dog on his lap, smoking and not lifting a finger to finish his projects or even clean up after himself.

The only "project" he had were his little seedlings and checking every day see if they were mature enough to smoke.

monopolised the microwave to dry them out if they were creating that unmistakeable aroma throughout the house.

Flew into rages if his plants died through overwatering or because he'd left them in a bad position (through "inattention").

I know there a many functioning, more responsible addicts out there, colics, but there are many more who aren't, so please don't try to defend mj to me.

Not to mention it's a known gateway to other, more potent drugs.

Sounds like a lot of the heavy mj users that I know. The worst being my sisters ex, when he couldnt get any he'd be in a constant rage at my sister and the kids. They lived in squalor and homelessness, kids ate mostly 2 minute noodles because a) they didnt have any money for food because it had been spent on his habit and b) the 1 bedroom unit that the 7 of them lived in didnt have a proper kitchen. The only clothes the kids got were hand me downs from my kids, the only birthday/christmas presents came from me. And no, he didnt drink or take harder drugs, this was purely an effect from mj and he's not the only one I know like that.

People make the mistake of thinking their experience is the only real one, just because some havent seen the worst effects of heavy mj use, doesnt mean they dont exist.

You make the observation that the addict spent all the families money on MJ yet you oppose legalisation??

A move that would make the addiction cost free??

So you would prefer that   the same situation happened to many more addicts familes??

How can prohibition and how did prohibition help your sisters ex other than to set exhorbitant black market prices for a

herb that grows wild profusely??

Icy Froth mentioned the munchies.... I bet that some reading this thread that are undergoing chemotherapy wish they

"had the munchies"

Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the more prominent health risks in modern Australian society

It is associated with risks to

health both in the short and long term, including mood and anxiety problems and chronic conditions caused by injury. It may also

affect a person’s ability to work, or participate in other aspects of family and community life. (Endnote 1)Excessive alcohol

consumption affects society as a result of property damage, road accidents and the need for law enforcement. In 2008 the estimated

annual cost to Australia’s health care system from drinking was $15 billion. (Endnote 2) Between 1995-96 and 2005-06, around

813,000 Australians were hospitalised for injury or disease attributable to alcohol. In the 10 years to 2005, around 32,700 Australians

aged 15 years and over died from causes attributable to risky or high risk drinking.(Endnote 3)

Tobacco and alcohol exact a far greater toll, between them accounting for some 12 per cent of global deaths.

Even aspirin is credited with causing in the vicinity of 50 deaths a year in Australia alone.

No deaths are attributable to marijuana.

Do you mean a link and advocacy like this????

http://www.epilepsy.com/article/2014/2/epilepsy-foundation-calls-increased-medical-marijuana-access-...

Statement Summary
  • The Epilepsy Foundation supports the rights of patients and families living with seizures and epilepsy to access physician directed care, including medical marijuana.
  • The Epilepsy Foundation calls for an end to Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) restrictions that limit clinical trials and research into medical marijuana for epilepsy.
  • The Epilepsy Foundation believes that an end to seizures should not be determined by one’s zip code.
Thursday, February 20, 2014

By Philip M. Gattone, President & CEO, Epilepsy Foundation, and

Warren Lammert, Chair, Epilepsy Foundation Board of Directors

With Commentary from Orrin Devinsky, M.D., Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, Director, NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center Member of Epilepsy Foundation National Board of Directors

As parents and as advocates, we feel an urgency to respond and take action on an issue that has been brought to the Epilepsy Foundation from individuals we serve across the country-- the use of marijuana to treat epilepsy. We write this with advice and support from Nathan Fountain, Chairman of our Professional Advisory Board, and with advice and support from a range of other leading epilepsy professionals and board members.

2.3 million Americans live with epilepsy, a neurological condition that includes recurring seizures. More than 1 million of them live with uncontrolled seizures. Some of these people may be helped by surgery or other non-drug treatments, but for many, no answers have been found yet.

People with uncontrolled seizures live with the continual risk of serious injuries and loss of life.

The Epilepsy Foundation supports the rights of patients and families living with seizures and epilepsy to access physician directed care, including medical marijuana.

Nothing should stand in the way of patients gaining access to potentially life-saving treatment. If a patient and their healthcare professionals feel that the potential benefits of medical marijuana for uncontrolled epilepsy outweigh the risks, then families need to have that legal option now -- not in five years or ten years. For people living with severe uncontrolled epilepsy, time is not on their side.

This is a very important, difficult, and personal decision that should be made by a patient and family working with their healthcare team.

Treatments for epilepsy with any form of marijuana come with risks, as there is much that is not known about its effects.

The consistency of available formulations also needs to be addressed.

Caution is appropriate, and we strongly recommend that patients with uncontrolled seizures seek out an epilepsy specialist.

However, existing therapies have real side-effects both known and unknown, and, just as there are risks with any treatment, every day without seizure control is a risk to life. Every seizure is a possible opportunity lost to live, learn, and grow.

The Epilepsy Foundation calls for an end to Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) restrictions that limit clinical trials and research into medical marijuana for epilepsy.

We applaud recent decisions that have allowed clinical trials of Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, to begin in several states. Certain components of medical marijuana, including CBD, have shown effectiveness in animal studies, and there have been encouraging anecdotal reports from patients. But further research and unbiased clinical trials are needed to establish whether and in what forms medical marijuana is or is not effective and safe. Restrictions on the use of medical marijuana continue to stand in the way of this research.

The Epilepsy Foundation believes that an end to seizures should not be determined by one’s zip code.

Our current situation as an epilepsy community is not acceptable. Families looking to access medical marijuana as a treatment are facing terrible decisions.

One parent may move across the country to live with a child to seek this treatment. Other families may uproot entirely, including leaving their job, to move where they can access CBD oil.

In the past, when therapies not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were available abroad and left only to those who could afford to travel, we fought for compassionate access.

We are here to continue the fight.

The Epilepsy Foundation will be doing the following to support improved access and research into medical marijuana:

  1. Calling on the Drug Enforcement Administration to implement a lesser schedule for marijuana so that it can be more easily accessible for medical research.
  2. Supporting appropriate changes to state laws to increase access to medical marijuana as a treatment option for epilepsy, including pediatric use as supported by a treating physician.
  3. Supporting the inclusion of epilepsy as a condition that uses medical marijuana as a treatment option where it is currently available.
  4. Supporting research on multiple forms of cannabis and seizures.
