Lovely story David.
When my daughter married she became mum to a retired bomb detector dog from the Army, a German Shepherd. She was a great dog and daughter and her husband were heartbroken when she had to be put to sleep.
Son in law would not make the decision so my daughter had to contact the officer in charge of the detector dogs to get permission to take the dog to work (she was a Vet nurse at the time).
The next day she was buried at the kennels on the Army base along with all her mates.
